Is the facing boundary directly straight on facing only or is it also diagonal?

Is the facing boundary for purpose of putting windows into an extension counted as only directly facing or does it take account that the new window may be diagonally facing a boundary? I'm not sure if that clear but if a window is put at the back of a terraced house, is the boundary they face the wall at the bottom of their garden or is it be taken diagonally so its the wall between them and their neighbour to the side?

I'd beg to differ syd. Think about the tens of thousands of rear "exempted" extensions to houses in urban environments where the only window is in the rear wall of the extension and at first floor level for example is maybe 20m from the rear boundary but perhaps only 2 - 3 metres from a side boundary. I have never seen an example of distance being measured diagonally either at local level or ABP level.

I’d agree with Muffler’s interpretation.

The regulation states: “from the boundary it faces” (single) and not “from any boundary”.

Otherwise, rear upper windows would need to be 11m from both sides, which is impossible on most sites.

In a typical rectangular site each window faces only one boundary. It would be the closest point between them, which may not be 90degrees

yeah fair points, i was just imagining diagonal boundaries ie a building at 45 degrees to its boundaries.

technically then a window can face 2 boundaries, so its closest point to either boundary (rather than any)

but i absolutely accept than in the vast, vast majority of cases the regs adequately cover it with "the boundary it faces"
