Have decided to pick up a TT for something different in the next couple months. Any owners or previous owners here any tips? Would like one with a bit of poke. TT RS seems the choice but they are thin on the ground.

Any major issues to be on the lookout for? Think they're a lovely looking car.

    Get petrol at minimum.

I've the 2.0T petrol mk3 for 5 years - highly enjoyable. No issues.

The instrument cluster can have failed LCD's, common fault for VAG cars of this era.

    Cartronix in UK fix them...

Lovely cheers. Is the diesel just sluggish or is it problematic?

If I was to bring one down from the north what do I have to pay does anyone know? Customs duty + VRT?

Cannot see why anyone would want a diesel TT. It's just the wrong engine in them. Petrol quattro fwiw imo.

Car has to have been registered in the North (not mainland UK) since before 01/01/21 to avoid customs duty and VAT. You just pay VRT then. Realistically I cannot see much money being saved by importing (used cars are expensive in the north too) but you might have a greater and cleaner choice.

Thanks for the info. How would I go about finding out if it was registered in the north before then? Just a case of asking?

Yeah it's not so much saving money it's just that there's a much greater choice up there. I'd happily spend a bit more for the right one.

Car history check or ask the seller/owner.

Engine sound, plus yeah… not nearly as nippy. With that said most on sale are Diesel. 🤢🤢🤢🤮

I had a petrol quattro a number of years ago. Nicest car I ever owned and I would it again.

Not really suitable for child seats at the back though ☹

Tax in them is pricey iirc

    I've a 2.0 petrol Quattro - tax was €370

The two back seats are tiny, but they have Isofix points so probably okay for child seats. Not for anybody over 5" though.

my mother in law still has her 07 TT ... just won't sell it as she loves it and currently drives an EV day to day. When our kids were small there wasn't any issue with the two car seats in the back (bit of a struggle to get them in) but kid loved the car.

It only has 90,000km on the clock and is in great nick - not worth selling and a fun option at the weekends

Yeah they're nearly all diesel on sale here. Bit more choice in the north. I'll hang around until the right one pops up

Wife had one a ' black edition' and a few things you should bear in mind. There is precious little interior space for bits and bobs, the ride is harsh, sporty yes but very firm. Parking can be a problem as the doors need to swing wide open so you can get in or out. Petrol or diesel they are thirsty if you put the shoe in. I found visibility a problem as I'm tall. Wipers are fűčķ all use at high speed. She had a MK1 before it and both of them seemed to suck in exhaust fumes into the cab at times. If your looking at the quattro make sure the haldex system oil has been changed. Sat Nav in her one was DVD rom based and was pointless. Connecting a modern smart phone was a PITA. Sound system was amazing and you'll find the driving experience second to none. Hope that helps.
