Wireless problem

I have an old DELL Dimension 8250 series PC with Windows XP I was trying today to connect it to the internet with an "tp-link AC600 Nano wireless USB adapter ARCHER T2U Nano" Eveything installed ok but, when I click "connect"on my network from the list. A small balloon pops up on the task bar saying windows needs a certificate to connect to my network. How can I fix this ? Its a bit weird because, If I click "connect" it seems to connect to the internet but its not. Internet Explorer does not work. It just shows what speed I have etc Anyway could anybody help me out please ? I dunno what to do

The message in the balloon says "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network" This computer was never used on the internet before. So, Do I need updates ? How do I fix this problem ?

I'd say, even if you are vintage enthusiast, keep that computer of the network.

Not a good idea connecting XP to the network but you should still be able do it.

Double check that the date and time on the machine is correct.

I remember this happening to me years ago. In the network properties there's a checkbox in the encryption settings called something like EAP or Enterprise authentication... Turn it off.

It's also possible that XP won't support the WPA2 or WPA3 on your router.

Boot Chrome Flex on it for safety. XP is just dangerous. Alternatively if you can spare €80 you'll probably pick up a more modern pc which will give you a much better experience.

Its essentially an unsupported operating system and as such unpatched and insecure.

If the date and time is wrong or the machine cannot retain the date and time you will have numerous issues accessing network resources.

It is unsupported and unpatched and relatively easy to get infected.

If you run video games on it, then I'd suggest not connecting to the internet unless you need to and not leaving it connected.

So the OS can get infected ? I thought I would be protected since I have Norton anti-virus. I need to connect to the internet because I want to play MP games that are Windows XP/Vista only. Probably Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier. SP3 (or SP2 with the KB893357 update) is needed for WPA2 support. But I really don't recommend connecting this to any sort of network.

Windows XP is completely unsupported and has been since 2014. So there’s no updates against security issues discovered after that date. Your copy of Norton probably won’t get updates either due to its age.

Run an XP VM on a more modern PC would be a better option IMO. As it is XP is full of holes, easy to get infected - I'd imagine your AV is possibly way out of date also. Your wireless possibly has security protocol issues. Have you used this dongle with this router successfully on another device? The XP machine wifi probably needs to be WPA2 PSK so check what you have it set to.

What games are you playing on XP ? Have you tried running them through compatibility mode on a newer system OS.

Could you get the games on steam?

Why do you need them to connect to a network.

Do not connect a Windows xp machine to the Internet. It has many vulnerabilities and has not been patched in about a decade. Its a sitting duck for any bad actors having a sniff about. If they can get into the xp machine, then they can get into the rest of your LAN from there. Your anti virus will not protect from core system vulnerabilities.

I would think the simpist option here is to use steam , are the games avaliable on that.

If not, can you get a copy of the games to be installed on Windows 10 .

If you must use XP would you do a fresh install of it and then install the service packs?

Ive never used that seamless mode but is that not just a VM .
