Exchanging an Alberta Driver's Licence (Class 5 GDL) for an Irish Licence

Has anyone returned to Ireland with an Alberta Class 5 GDL driver's licence and exchanged it for an Irish one? I currently have a Class 5 GDL licence and am wondering if I will be able to get any Irish licence in exchange for it. 

I have looked at the NDLS site here https://www.ndls.ie/licensed-driver/exchange-my-foreign-driving-licence.html#recognised-states and it mentions nothing about exchanging a GDL, just a Class 5. So wondering if I have to go through the process of passing the advanced driving test before leaving or will they accept the GDL and issue me with a restricted Irish licence.

Just tell them you "lost" your Irish driving licence and they'll issue you with a replacement. They have no idea that you exchanged it for an Albertan driving licence as there is no reciprocal agreement between Alberta and the Rep. of Ireland.

There is a reciprocal agreement between Alberta and Ireland https://www.ndls.ie/licensed-driver/exchange-my-foreign-driving-licence.html#recognised-states. In any case, OP has not mentioned that they ever held an Irish license. Seems like Class 5 GDL is the equivalent of N in Ireland so they may well exchange it for an N in Ireland but it would only be valid for automatic cars.

Yeah I never had an Irish licence so nothing I can do about that. Where do you see that it's the equivalent to an N licence?

The Alberta part just doesn't seem as fleshed out as for example the Ontario part. Alberta says Class 5 for Category B but doesn't break it down further. If I look at Ontario for example, they say both a G and G2 are accepted and the G2 is the equivalent of a Class 5 GDL in Alberta. All provinces have separate agreements with Ireland so maybe Alberta and Ireland havn't gotten that far as of yet.

I've emailed the NDLS but will probably have to call them to actually get an answer.

I mean class 5 GDL and N both come with (roughly) the same restrictions. (Unlike BC for example where is another test to move on from N)

Just to update in case anyone else comes looking, I heard back from the NDLS and there is no agreement for the Class 5 GDL between Ireland and Alberta. So a GDL is worth nothing.
