I'm looking for a petrol saloon, just dont do the mileage anymore for a diesel. I'm not mad on hatchbacks either. Octavia and Corrola on my shortlist, any other one I should be considering?

A class up but Superb/Passat should be on the list too. Superb has the benefit of a hatch.

Recent Corollas are all hybrids, if that makes a difference to you. An 80 year old aunt wanted to update her 2012 petrol and all I could get her was a hybrid Corolla (saloon only for her golf clubs). Despite an initial hatred she loves it now.

Yes, Superb and Passat would be in the bigger Avensis/Mondeo class. Octavia is not a saloon either, it's a hatchback btw. Very few compact sized saloons on sale now. Astra, Focus, Jetta saloons all discontinued.

Take a look at the Renault Megane: https://www.carsireland.ie/3140968

Or if you want to stay with Japanese then:

    Mazda 3: https://www.carsireland.ie/3140030

    Honda Civic: https://www.carsireland.ie/3094427

Dacia Duster is a serious machine.

That's great but doesn't really help the OP who is looking for a saloon.

Massive inside, outside only about 20cm longer than an Octy.

If you don't have a family then maybe overkill.

Thanks for the suggestions all, i'm now very interested in a Mazda 3 saloon, ticks every box it seems - reliable, looks great, comfortable inside, seems like great value compared to the others. Not a lot of them around but I can wait.

    Anyone experience with them?

Have a 1.6 petrol the past 6 months. Doing between 250 & 300km a week & averaging 6.5ltr/100km. AFAIK its the same engine as a Ford Focus. Lovely comfy ride. Have to say I'm a fan

    Edit:- Mine is a 2008

The newer Mazda 3 from 2013 onwards has no links to the Ford Focus anymore as Ford and Mazda had parted ways by that stage. Mazda used their own platform and engines from then on. Petrol engine was intitally a 2.0 litre normally aspired (no turbo) unit which was later replaced by a 1.5 litre (again no turbo), both are pretty reliable as they are not complex but don't have the low down torque of a turbo engine. The cars themselves are very nice to drive and engaging. Spare parts can be expensive enough though if you have to source them from a dealer but that's probably offset by typical Japanese reliability. The infotainment system in them is a bit dated but really depends what your coming from.

Have a feeling they went all hybrid with most of the ranges outside the Yaris as that’s what 80%+ were buying anyhow

OP doesnt say new or secondhand but there are a few available used.

They sold the Corolla saloon in 1.6 litre petrol only form at launch in 2019. They were in basic Aura spec only. They also sold the Corolla hatchback in 1.2 litre turbo. They were both dropped later that year so only hybrid after that. They are not that much cheaper second hand these days than a similar hybrid version.
