ah great thanks again unkel, I'm a bit clueless on all this🤣. Excellent I'll se if the guy installing my new batteries can hook this one up too, going from 5kw to 20kw storage (if this works) will be a gamechanger for me. As i have a heatpump and electric car my usage is fairly high so load shifting will really help

First step on the learning curve is to get the units right 😀

Storage capacity is in kWh. Power is in kW. So if you have a 20kWh battery and a 5kW inverter, it would take 4 hours at maximum power to empty your battery

If it interests you, have a look at Will Prowse's YouTube channel. All about batteries and solar systems, beginner friendly and a really nice guy. Well until he got a bit too redneck / prepper'ish 😁

Yeah, the early Will differs from the more recent Will. I've given up on him at this point. Can't stop talking about gun ranges and very showy about his wealth in all his cars too. But education wise, he's very good.

Can I jump in here on the question of two different battery sizes/manufacturers/BMS's in parallel - I thought this was a big no-no before, but I've got a 5kWh Dyness DL5.0C installed and a 15kWh Gobel gp-sr1-pc200 (Pace BMS) waiting to replace it…. should I consider keeping both though? I guess I'm asking whether 15S vs 16S is the only consideration?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,120 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yes, both the chemistry and the nominal voltage must be the same. Then there is the practical consideration that if you want comms between inverter and battery, that only one battery can do that. The other battery will just tag along (nothing wrong with that). Also ideally, you should have the packs properly paralleled on solid copper bus bars, not daisy chained with cables.

So what happens in this instance regarding comms then?

Does the inverter only see and report for the main 15kw battery (assuming the 15 was the one to be added first) and does it actually see 20KWh of battery connected and what way does SOC etc work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,120 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Inverter doesn't see anything. The BMS in whatever pack you want to handle the comms, will tell inverter what to do, based on its SOC. Which is automatically kept up or down by the other pack. All good.

Sorry for the hijack, so would this mean that say with an Overdischarge soc of 10% would be achieved by both batteries when dumping to the grid? And like wise charging to 100% SOC would be achieved by both batteries?

And this is the bit I don't quite understand would the BMS of one battery be able to shut down the incoming charge from the inverter, but the other battery may continue to charge if required to reach 100%?

Looking for second hand CALB / EVE cells for a friend of mine who is setting up a substantial off grid system in his village in Nigeria. I will pay about half the going rate per kWh of new cells from NKON.nl (ex VAT price)

PM me if you have some to sell. Can pay cash / Revolut / bank transfer / PayPal

Nice one @unkel. I’d like to throw a few quid towards that initiative if I may, by way of appreciation for all the advice and guidance received here over the course of my solar/battery journey.

Appreciate that, but no need at all! He is happy to pay market value for the batteries. I'm just throwing in my advice for free.

Got a good few of them, thanks lads. All are gone or going to the Nigerian lad. He wants more of them though, so if anyone has any for sale, PM me!

Looking to order a few seplos V4 kits from EU in bulk. Trying to get the best value for them. Would anyone be interested in jumping on the order with me. Looking at 1700 a kit that would be a seplos V4 in white or black casing and 314ah eve cells grade A. Collection would be from Limerick in roughly a weeks time.

The Seplos BMS are crap. And there is significant self-assembly required on those packs. Would you not just buy the cells, the case and a JK BMS separately? Will be cheaper and better.

And much cheaper again with a much shorter pay back time if you just buy the cells and just a single JK BMS, that will do for many sets of 16 cells. And then build an enclosure yourself or go without any case / enclosure at all if you can stack the cells somewhere safely

Will one JK bms manage many sets of 16 cells @unkel this could be really useful.

Unkel the seplos kits aren't as bad nowadays as the old style bms they had. The jkbms style kits seem to have the same building in them.

Jkbms have some advantage over seplos with the built-in active balancer.

Currently got globelpower batteries using the jkbms V2 with screen and Comms. Cell resistance is a bit hit and miss with errors appearing one day and gone the next. But only been using it 2 weeks to get a full review will take longer.

You can parallel sets into a 16 cell configuration e.g. if you buy 32 cells then you can parallel two individual cells to act as one, therefore resulting in 16 cells from a BMS perspective, it's very common to do this

Yep. Before I switched to a Tesla Model S based battery setup, I used 8 sets of CALB cells on 1 JK BMS. As in my battery was a single 15S8P pack, not 8 separate batteries.

Now I have 7 separate Tesla 48V batteries, each with their own JK BMS

Not sure if I would call my Twizy a bargain, these cars are not cheap. But it is cheaper than you could get a similar Twizy for in the UK. And this is the only one for sale in Ireland

    Super fun to drive

Looking for more CALBs if anyone is upgrading. I'll pay 60% of the ex-VAT price of new cells per kWh
