I wouldn’t recommend a sea kayak if you’re planning on using it in a river.

sea kayaks are great for going for a paddle around the coast or doing lengths up and down a lake. But they’re a pain in the ass to turn.

also for a first boat, I’d recommend against a play boat.

I got a Perception/Wavesport Scooter as my 4th boat a few years ago. It’s an easy to use casual boat, but could also be decent for some rapids/waves/surfing if used with the knee straps and backrest.

got it from Bantry Bay Canoes in Cork

I have a Riot Disco and a RAD Bliss Stick 185, both are play boats, fun for arsing around on flat water, surfing, going off drops, but not something for going on a long tour down a river.

I picked up a Dagger Vertigo as a spare boat for cheap a friend to use. It would have been considered to be a play boat when it first came out but by todays standards, it’s a bucket! Still fine for going for a paddle.

there’s a bit of a stigma against sit-on-tops (like the Scooter I linked above) but they came be good fun. And a bit cheaper. And you don’t need a spraydeck for it.

something like this Pyranha Ion might be a decent all rounder
