Say you get paid your salary monthly however one month you do a whole lot of overtime. But just for that month. Will you be taxed so much more for that 1 month? And do you get that tax back at the end of the year or not? Is it something an employee needs to apply for at year end or would it be paid automatically

It depends on what your Standard Rate Cut off Point (SRCOP) is and how much your normal gross monthly pay is.

If you usually get paid significantly less than your SRCOP, and one month your cumulative pay breaches the SRCOP, then for the following months you may get PAYE refunds. This refund is usually paid via payroll.

If you are taxed on a normal cumulative basis your employer will take into account any overpayment of PAYE through the year, each time they run payroll. You should always file an end of year return anyway to claim for any additional credits/reliefs you may be entitled to and declare any additional sources of non PAYE income.
