Lever Action or Pump .410

Good morning,

I have a fancy for a nice .410 to bring back my youth and would like a pump or even better a lever action style. Or i may go for another small gauge as would like also use it for training my son.

2 question

• are they sold in Ireland
• are the lever/pump classed as a restricted firearm, I see a few in uk shops are listed as restricted.

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum. The 2008 Firearms Act would be your best friend here as it is the main piece of legislation that defines what is a restricted and non restricted firearm. Regarding shotguns, there’s are a couple of criteria to make it non restricted, being able to hold no more than 3 rounds, a barrel over 24 inches and not having a folding, telescoping stock or pistol grip. You can have any action y oh want, so lever action or pump action are ok, you can even get a semi automatic if you want. Naturally the UK has different laws, so some shotguns are section 1 firearms and others are section 2 shotguns, the main difference being capacity.

410 isn’t very popular over here, 12 gauge is by far the most popular, so for availability of firearms over here, I’d recommend a 12 gauge. But if you’re steadfast on the 410, go for a non restricted one just to safe yourself the headache of licensing a restricted firearm. If you’re importing from the UK, just make sure you know what specifications the shotgun has so you’re not stuck plugging the magazine.

the little .410 I had in mine is a 20" or 22" barrel maybe that's why it was restricted.

yes 12 gauge is very popular however I have a 12 gauge so not necessary. I have an old Henry Atkins .410 dual hammer gun from many moons ago and its a heirloom piece so not in use much.

mainly want it to teach my son and also when a rifle can not be used for flying vermin (grey crows) a shotgun is safer.

Three slight addendums to that, the Statutory Instrument 21/2008, not 2008 Firearms Act(thankfully the most recent of those was 1964 IIRC.

The 24 inches barrel is equal to or greater, so you can have a 24 inch shotgun barrel as non restricted.

Also 410 isn't exactly uncommon, a lot of country gun dealers do more ammo sales in that than 28 gauge for example. Since 410 is very popular as a garden/small game gun vs target or clay it doesn't get seen very often mind you.

410 pump is somewhat available in the country, lever action I've yet to see a 410 here, but they can certainly be gotten.

Adler Arms(Turkish Company) makes a 410 lever action which is reasonably well regarded in Canada where they are imported to:

As far as pump 410s go Mossberg makes some, even a suppressed one is in McBrides currently:

I know other manufacturers do make pump 410s too, particularly Turkish ones, but might be best to pop into your local gun shop and see what they might be able to source.

I can also recommend http://www.fingalsports.com/ & Patrick O'Mahoney if you are looking for the Henry lever action in particular, as they deal in a lot of classic firearms, Paddy in lever actions particularly so would likely be able to get a Henry lever action in.

Failing all that have a look on the Mossberg(for a pump) or Henry USA/Adler Arms websites for distributors/dealers in Ireland and contact them as, being agents, they should be able to order in any of those manufacturer's firearms & accessories.

I had not seen the alder arms 410 and is a nice gun

Mossberg seems very popular and also reasonable prices too for non suppressed models.

The henry was the one I like with the side loading

No worries, I have a soft spot for 410s having been the first shotgun that I shot ;-)

The Adler Arms is pretty nice, especially if you prefer the underside loading a la pump actions have, but personally kings gate(side gate) is just sweet :-D

Oh Mossberg shotguns are very good, popular, relatively cheap(their Maverick 88 series in particular, but only available in 12g and 20g), and a lefty friendly safety mounted on the rear of the top of the receiver.

Ah that Marlin 1895 is pretty damn sweet, shame about the 22" barrel making it restricted(for all the difference 2 inches makes 🙄).

I'd say for cool factor go lever action, for cheapness and efficiency pump wins, but I think you and himself will be pretty happy with either ;-)

Strange that it is being sold in the UK at @22ins as the UK min legal is 24 ins. So possibly get a "muzzle brake " permanently mounted on it and you should be gold.

Remington makes or, made a 410 pump too. It was as good as their famous Wingmaster " series. They usually go cheap too, as most people don't really use 410 here much.

thanks for the advice, after bit looking and holding few models i think i may settle on a 20 bore semi
