Collins Centenary Setpiece

The joint appearance of FF and FG at this is performative theatre. The Civil War divisions have been irrelevant for years. The centenary ceremony at Beal na Blath is theatre. But to what political purpose? Charlie Flanagan regards the IRA of the War of Independence as murderers so by extension is Collins. Are there votes still for FG in playing the Collins card? What demographic? Or is Martin hoping to upstage Varadkar and make a speech for his “shared island” stuff and co-opt the hollow husk of Collins to the new cause, if only we knew what that was. The DF who have been gutted by FFG for decades are there already to provide another layer of theatre. The whole thing is deeply saddening.

This country is regarded as one of the best in the world but to listen to some people on here you'd swear we were all destitute.

The civil war parties did good over the last 100 years the workers party and new sinn Fein weren't around back then they are pretenders to a legacy they took that wasn't theirs. It's a pity we didn't get the six counties but there are a lo lr of people up there that hate us so I get why it had to be that way.

I’m not sure if the tweet has the right year as the commemoration was banned in 1933 but did O ‘Duffy who was leader of FG from Sept 1933 attend in 1934 and give this salute.

Don't be fooled, if Collins hadn't been shot this country would likely have become a fascist state like Portugal and Spain. Although that may have been an improvement on the socially regressive society that came out of the war of independence.

Doubt most of the general public are that bothered one way or the other at this stage mainly die hard FFFG get involved in these events .Of course Michael Collins is a huge figure in our history but I pay little attention to these events more concerned with the present .

There does appear to be an automatic assumption by Fine Gael that Collins would have been in Fine Gael.

In some ways that seems likely but not absolute. Noting stopping him going to FF or setting up a different party completely. I think the country would have evolved a lot differently had he nor been shot.

However, the fact is he was in Sinn Fein of the time and that's all one can go on.

Fine Gael effectively celebrating a national hero they would refer to as a terrorist today I find quite ironic.

He was a member of the political movement that would become Finn Gael. He fought (and died) for the state against "what would today be regarded as terrorists and who would go on to become terrorists in the latter part of the 20th century.

You like everyone else has absolutely no idea whatsoever how Collins or anyone from that time would have behaved at any later period in time. You can’t even claim to have known the man.

The past is exactly that and I’m sick and tired of people claiming that this one or that one would have done whatever is on their agenda when in reality no one knows.

Everytime I hear Béal na Bláth/Collins mentioned. I don't think of the 'National Hero' angle. I think of military stupidity. Open top car, limited protection, wide open road. And not only that they STOPPED and returned fire! Instead of getting out of there as quickly as possible. Made zero sense, and Collins the CnC who was not used to combat.

Personally I think they should stop the hyperbole around Collins and this commemoration. Militarily it was stupidity beyond belief. And it was a loss of life that could have been avoided. If proper precautions were taken. Why commemorate idiocy from a lot of different a angles. And have current contemporary politicians fighting over some Collin's mythology and reflected glory?

I’ll have to read speeches later to see if I missed anything first time round. DF did well.
