Personal Details from Reg Plate

Hello,

I am wondering out of curiosity how a solicitor gets personal contact details / address etc for people with just a cars registration plate.

Do they have access to a database or do they have to request it from somewhere and if they request it what do they have to prove to be allowed to get that data.

Best guess being a mate who's a garda.

Would that be considered a breach of GDPR if a garda gave that information out?

From memory, there is a formal process for a solicitor to request details from Vehicle Licensing in Shannon. Some online searching should help.

For a start, the Garda's inquiry on that particular plate would be logged, and available for review if there was a formal complaint. It would be a fairly foolish Garda that would expose themselves to disciplinary or losing their job for a mate.

It would also be a fairly foolish solicitor to base a potential legal action on information coming from a mate.

I thought anyone can get this information if they pay for it?

If you are looking to buy a car, can't you run a reg check to see mileage and service history prior to purchase?

If I spotted a woman I liked the look of getting into her car and wanted to find out where she lives so I could turn up at her house, do you think running a motorcheck for 40 euro would give me this information?....not a hope lads. This info is private for a very good reason

Garda have access to it of course but it's tracked every time they run a check and they'd want to have a very valid garda related reson for checking.

Of course it doesn't have individuals private addresses on it.Why would you give this advice to someone when

1) you don't know

2) it's so monumentally stupid that applying any logic or cop on would make it clear its not true.

For what its worth:-

Where an accident has taken place and the Gardaí were called, then the solicitor would write to AGS with their client's details, date and location of accident, and ask for a Garda report (where no prosecution will take place) or a preçis (where there will be).

Garda report/preçis does include the other party's name, licence plate, insurance company and insurance number. (Where someone didn't have insurance, obviously that would be different.)

If there was no garda report, then you're in a world of hurt, but you'd be reliant on having at least the name of their insurance company or some such.

If all you have is an index, then you really need to contact the Gardaí as soon as. Bad Things™ can happen otherwise.
