My son has his Driving Test next week.

The car’s NCT has expired. We applied for an NCT test back in June and had to take the next available booking in October!!

I have printed off the NCT booking reference so am wondering can he use his car for his driving test considering the NCT has expired and awaiting NCT with big backlog?

    Thanks

No. Unless the NCT is displayed in the window and is up to date he will not be able to do the test using that car. The examiner will simply not carry out the test.

If you go online just after midnight you can get cancellations for nct closer to now

Seems harsh if they take this line and Gardai doesn't as you cant get a NCT test for months, but there again wouldn't surprise me with the RSA.

No, nothing surprises me with the RSA. I'd imagine you're predicament isn't all that unusual nowdays. My NCT was due 2nd Aug....i got booking for Fri.2nd DECEMBER??? I'm thinking 'sure that's grand....... assuming she passes my new DAY 1 will be 2nd Dec "......... but NO....it'll be backdated 2nd August..... so I'll have basically "used up" 1/3 or 4months ( my car is over 10yrs so it's annual) of my new NCT on the date of the test. I find that amazing / kinda stupid

Its not harsh at all. It’s actually part of the test.

The examiner is already taking a risk being in a strangers car with no idea of the competence of the driver and no dual controls.

Do you think they should add that that the car have no NCT?

    OP

I will repeat this so your son is not standing there like a spare tit on test day with a car with No NCT.

    He has 3 options.

    1. Reschedule test.
    2. Use his instructors car
    3. Use someone else’s car.

Phone them first thing tomorrow morning and explain the situation. They may well be able to sort you out.

I was testing in Chareville 2008 for a 6 Month stint ( hated it BTW) so......... the three bits of paper ( tax, insurance & NCT if applicable) MUST BE CLEARLY DISPLAYED AND IN DATE/ VALID.......simple as that. While I totally empathise with the OP & his Son who are in no way 'at fault', it is what it is. My advice would be phone the NCT first thing Monday & explain the predicament. Now, OP may have to travel a bit to test centre but they ALL fit you in quickly

While Ouch might appear a bit blunt the advice is correct.

You would be taking a chance presenting to do the test with an expired NCT.

Make arrangements for an alternative car now.

Even if you did get a cancellation the car could fail.

We had a thread here last year where testers were refusing to do tests in cars with the wrong colour green strip on the insurance disc which is an indication of how strict they can be on rules.

I applied for nct on daughter's car got a date for February 2023, went on at midnight Friday night and got a cancellation for October went on again last night and got one for 27th August. Op should have been doing this

OP there's an option on the nct booking site to be put on the emergency list for cars who's nct is expired or expiring & can't get a booking. I had to do that as I couldn't get one till December & my NCT was up the end of July. Have one now this week. They're very good about it. You can also ring. But yes, my understanding is that the NCT must be in date for the test.

    Thanks for all your help.

NCT arranged an appointment within 48 hours, fair dues!

    Son subsequently passed test 😃👏

That's the ticket!!!!! Well done to the lad.

As an aside ...... my 3 daughters all sailed through 1st attempt......the boy ( youngest) who was the most car-savvy & IMO the best driver of the crew went down in flames on his first "go"........ we got some milage out of that🤣
