Trackman Range distances

Just wondering does anyone have experience on the trackman ranges round the country. Used the one in palmerstown driving range and was confused on the distances. When I converted the data to that of a pro v1 or premium ball the distances fell off by 10 yards or more carry than the standard non premium ball setting? Is this correct?

Doesn't seem right. Should increase a few %, that's what I've seen at the one in Ballyneety

That’s what I was thinking so when I clicked convert button on the trackman range all my scores in blue were say the converted ones were lower Carry than the range balls in red/orange

Seen the peak moved so I presume its because the spin increased over a range ball

Used the one in Palmerstown and noticed the same, also distances on certain clubs were way off my usual distance. Great facility but not sure I'd trust the numbers.

Interesting, the trackman range doesn't actually report spin numbers (well Ballyneety didn't the last time I was there) so I'm assuming it's not measured. So it would be saying that you're getting increased spin with a premium ball over regular with a 3W, and I think that would have to be based on assumed not real spin numbers, and therefore would always be the case.

Maybe it does measure spin, but I'm not sure why it then wouldn't report it.

I went somewhere a while ago that had Trackman down range. Distances were not something I would trust at all. About halfway through the session realised that each bay is calibrated and you need to recalibrate or hit along the calibration line.

Asked before I started about this and was told it was all setup, ended up not being the case at all and a total waste of time. Wasn't Palmerstown somewhere out past Sandyford that had it setup on their range.

There are only two trackman ranges in the south, ballyneety and Palmerstown. I think you may have used top tracer which is a level down in terms of quality

I used the Trackman in Palmerstown as well. My Irons were well off but my woods were bang on I also didnt get much change in distance when you click button for normal ball distances about 5 yards extra max.. But to be honest I wasn't hitting my irons great and it was my first time using the trackman. I have also used Top Tracer in the Spawell find this over exaggerates your distances by about 15/20 yards a club

I actually think they must be a light version as they dont give swing speed for one..

a light version for sure. I just thought at least when converted to a premium ball the distances carry wise would increase not decrease by 5-10. Great facility to have though just needs checking on the carry distances

But sometimes a cheaper ball will go further than a premium ball.....always carry a brick in my pocket for this reason. For long par 4s I may struggle reach in 2

The trackman range appears to measure only ball speed, height and dispersion. There's no trackman unit behind you, just some stuff in the roof (I think) which is picking up some ball metrics (though not spin). So no swing speed, spin, strike location or any other advanced stuff. I think you could call it trackman light.

Back over in Palmerstown this weekend and the distances are certainly off, like it had an average of 130 metres for my 7 iron when I know it goes 150. 133 average for my 6 iron when I know it goes 160. Pity because it's an excellent setup just needs so calibration.

Yep, after conversion some actually get shorter. I thought they allowed nearly 10% extra for using range balls.

Probably needs to be recalibrated as you said. I think Top Tracer and Trackman range work by having cameras that pick up the ball, so there are probably lots of things that could cause it to be out of whack.

Afaik, you can only change your ball if it has become lost, damaged or scuffed etc.

You can't change on a whim, or for strategic reasons in competitions afaik.

Under normal conditions -- meaning the ball wasn't damaged beyond reasonable use, or it didn't wind up in a water hazard or was lost -- a golfer can change golf balls in between holes. Once a hole is completed, a golfer can swap out that golf ball for a new one before the start of the next hole. Generally speaking, however, a golfer is expected to play a hole with a single ball. This way, a golfer can't have a driving ball, an approach ball, a putting ball, etc.

Yeah I would have used the brick as a provisional and would usually go back same brand of ball at next hole.

Pros wouldnt be allowed do this. They also wouldnt be playing stableford often

I had the same there with my irons. I was really confused, but reading this, now it makes sense.

I think the driver distances were fine for me though. It did seem to be just the irons.

Visited Ballyneety trackman range last night and now i share the op's confusion. Ball conversion to premium is knocking a good 10% off carry on most of my clubs. This is the complete opposite of what i have seen in the past and i can clearly see this in the app. What's even more confusing is that the final converted numbers sort of look ok, it's the raw numbers that look odd to me.

For example back in January i was carrying my 7i 155 raw, 175 converted. Last night it was 195 raw 175 converted. 175 is bang on what i see on course.

The guy working there suggested it might be weather related. There might be some truth in that, but there's no way i was actually carrying that range ball 40 yards more last night compared to January. Also by eye i don't think my 7i was carrying that far.

In conclusion i think the final numbers look ok, but i find it difficult to trust the data
