I was reading about PATHs (portlaoise action to homelessness) Facebook update, they said homeless people were starving and dependent on other food from the soup kitchen, and not to be ignorant, obviously some homeless people spend money on their kids, drugs etc but surely one or two homeless people have some dole money for food 🤷‍♀️

Trying to feed yourself without a kitchen leaves you reliant on buying cooked food from cafes etc. Which is vastly, vastly dearer than doing it at home and would consume whatever money you have much quicker.

Sandwich from lidl/aldi/dealz €1.50 - €2.25, cereal bar and fruit for breakfast not too expensive, if they could find a place to use a microwave like the local parish center they could heat up a meal for about €2. If not, they could eat another sandwich, not ideal obviously but cost effective.

I always thought No. You need an address to get the dole. That was a situation in the past, I know. Maybe things have changed? Or that they can use a homeless shelters address.

A sandwich and microwaveable dinner that must be tiny if it only costs €2 😶 People who are homeless are people. They have a right to decent food.

The homeless shelters address is sufficient. And has been for decades and decades. If not forever.

Much more recently, An Post will provide what looks like a real street address for homeless people to use for other services; but goes to a post office box.

Of course they do. If the State didn't provide dole for the homeless it'd be all over the media all the time.

For someone who didn't know that homeless people could even claim the dole, it's amazing that you have their entire diet and food budget worked out. What other social problems could you single-handedly solve without knowing the first thing about them?

I never said they weren't entitled to decent food.

Being on disability benefit I'm familiar with the sambos and microwaveable meals for roughly €2 and they're adaqute, nice and nutritious, well some of them are anyway

I am sure homeless people with no income/ worrying about income struggle to find anything lighthearted about their situation.

I'm not denying that, nothing is ideal or easy about it, if the person was based in a town they could buy the sandwich when they're ready to eat it, and if they had a parish center or a place that allowed use of a microwave to the public they could go to tesco get the meal and then bring it to the place to microwave it. But in reality it might now work out like that.
