Where exactly does the port tunnel start and end?

I have looked online but cannot find any specific information besides the fact that it connects the M50 to the city. I want to avoid it at all costs.

1) If I am travelling from Clondalkin to Malahide on the M50 will I go through the port tunnel?

2) If I am travelling from Rathgar to the city, will I go through the port tunnel?

Neither of those routes will take you via the tunnel, or near it - you will though pass the tolls on M50 with the Clondalkin to Malahide journey (it is possible to go cross country to Blanchardstown or Finglas junctions and avoid the tolls (if you have google maps set it to avoid tolls) but, it'll put a bit of time into your journey.

The tunnel connects the Port exit with N1/M1 at Santry.

If you select Rathgar to Malahide then it is possible (and maybe quicker) to go via the tunnel (and Eastlink Toll bridge) but again, not necessary and you can take a route well away from the tunnel.

One end of the tunnel is at the Coolock Lane roundabout and the other end is at Promenade Road, you can search this end on the map as a 'Dublin Tunnel Toll'. And the first one as 'Dublin Port Tunnel (Santry)'.

As above, keep in mind another one, the barrier-free paid toll on the M50 between the Exits 6 (Blanchardstown, Navan Road) & 7 (Lucan, Liffey Valley, Palmerstown).

OP, your best bet is to use Google Maps and tell it you want to avoid toll roads. Find your destination and click on the 'Directions' button. When the route appears onscreen, tap the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner, tap 'route options' and click on 'avoid toll roads'.

You'd walk from Rathgar to the city centre in 15 minutes. Have no idea why you'd think the port tunnel would even come into the equation.

Actually, it’s on the N40 stretch between Mahon Point SC and Dunkettle, where the River Lee traverses over it

If you mean the Limerick Tunnel, its located on the M18 between J2 and J3, as it goes under the Shannon

The tunnel exits on to the M50 on the northern side. That section of what was the M1 was rebadged the M50 a few years ago. That causes some confusion for those not familiar with the area. The M1 now starts/ends at the large roundabout where most people assume the M50 starts/ends.

The port tunnel, like all national primary routes, has a road number, and that number is M50 (or N50 to be really technical). There was a bit of confusion a few years back when the Herald, in a hallmark of great journalism, ran a story saying that people were getting confused by the signs for the tunnel pointing away from where they thought the M50 was. So the NRA/TII went out and removed the M50 route number from the southern direction of the Port Tunnel and signed it “Tolled Tunnel” instead. The northbound direction (which is, er, southbound from J3 onwards) still has M50 on it.

By the way there’s a really simple explanation as to why the Port Tunnel never was and never could have been part of the M1. At the time it opened the N1 still followed its original route through Whitehall and into the city centre. So the port tunnel was not the M1 and couldn’t have been. The N-roads inside the M50 have now all (N11/N31 to Dun Laoghaire aside) been detrunked, but that happened some years later.

45mins is obviously walking, as they were replying to a post saying it could be walked in 15mins.

I'm pretty sure the N1 still exists from Fr Mathew Bridge on the Liffey to Santry (and vice versa). There are several signs indicating same.

There may well be signs still up. We were never a country to race to take down signs. There are still signs up with old T and L road numbers some 45 years later if you know where to look.

However, the detrunking did happen, as this SI shows:

But the signage I referred to was for parts of the N1 which were not declassified i.e. not mentioned in the SI you referred to. Turnapin is a good way out from the city centre and the SI indicates that the declassification begins there so I presume the N1 remains intact before that as the signage indicates.

No, the SI doesn’t indicate the declassification begins there - it indicates the route begins there. The Order does not, as you suppose, amend the earlier 2006 Order, it repeals it and starts again from scratch in declaring the N roads. Think about the consequences of your interpretation- the N1 would end at Turnapin (ie M50 J3/M1 J1) and there would be no N-roads outside of Dublin! fact the opposite is true; the N1 starts at Turnapin and there are non N-roads inside the M50 (other than the N11/N31).

Regulation 2 provides that:

“Each public road mentioned by number beside the letter N in column (1) opposite a description of the road in column (2), of Schedule 1 is classified as a national road and is a national primary road.”

If a road is not mention in the 2012 Order (as subsequently amended), it is not an N-road.

Regulation 4 provides for the repeal of the previous 2006 Order (which had repealed the 1994 Order and it’s various amendments). This is in no way an amendment of the 2006 Order, it’s a replacement.

The background to all this, by the way, is that Dublin City Council wanted to slap various speed limits on roads in its area which the NRA (as was) were not okay with; the roads were detrunked to remove that perceived obstacle. It’s perhaps more obvious on the N4 which clearly becomes the R148 at its junction with the M50 inbound; the signage there took years to change too.

As well as the signage being incorrect, Google maps would also appear to be out of date as it lists the R132 from Santry to the city centre as the 'N1'.
