NCT - dipped headlight failure focused too high

Recently had car NCT’d and it failed due to dipped headlight focused too high. Took it to the garage, they said they refocused it but when I took it back to the NCT centre it failed again same issue same side. Rang garage and they said light leveller might be gone? Is this something they should have detected when I took the car in to have lights refocused before the NCT recheck?

You would imagine that if the leveller was broken then it should have failed when the garage tested it after adjusting the headlight. It just sounds like a fob off to me as they don't want the hassle of you coming back to them a 3rd time with another fail. In many cases the equipment can be miscalibrated or the person using it isn't sure what they are at which could potentially result in them breaking it too when adjusting it.

I'd just take it somewhere else and mention what you have been told. It should be easy enough for them to tell if it's broke or not.

Logical fix would be to bring it back to the garage. It's not possible for anyone to tell you whats wrong over the phone. It could be within limits but NCT beam setters are very sensitive compared to garage equipment.

It was only in the garage once so far. Second repair was the receptionists opinion :)

NCT beam setters allow a massive margin, they aren't even slightly sensitive

I read it as being third visit too untill I reread it several times. That's the only reason I pointed it out.

Not sensitive for low or left to the point of having brutal bad lights. High or right is another story,doesn't matter if it's an inch or a foot high,it's a fail. Having said that,the garage could have set it the same as the other one without a beam setter - it should still pass.
