Name "change" via deed poll

    Dia dhaoibh,

I've been looking into getting a name "change" via deed poll (I can't post links get, but Google "Ireland name change" and it'll be the first result). I say "change" as I'm only moving from the English form over to my Irish form. From what I've read up on it (in aforementioned result), there's a E60 fee for the deed poll registration, and the signing (along with a witness) must be done in front of a solicitor or commissioner for oaths, 'which also carries a small fee'.

Is this "all" that's required, and what would roughly be the free for the solicitor (I don't have one I work with atm)?

Any help is greatly appreciated 😊

    Ms

I have applied to have my name changed legally too and all the solicitor I used charged me was 10 euros.

No sign of my name change yet do :(

I was really hoping it woykd be done by now because this is a big thing for me.

I gear it might have got lost in the post but hope not.

I think I am going to ring the office U sent it to on Monday if there is nothing in the post.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Nice one - did you just sign your printed form in the prescence of the solicitor and a witness? They're slightly vague in the search result site I mentioned, so I want an *exact* to-do list

Is just using the Irish version of your name considered to be a change of name? I wouldn't have thought so.

Yeah just Irish name, I prefer my Gaelic heritage to the English one I was Christened with. I want to be able to use it on debit card, passport, work account etc. so I'm fine with spending a small bit to do it via deed poll

Interesting - at college I tried changing it to the Irish name, but they told me I'd need to show an official document (passport, driving licence etc) to change it. That's why I'd like info on how to go about things with the solicitor

Your legal name in Ireland is any name which you are known by.

Getting the Irish version of your name on the passport may require some evidence that you are known by it and use it. So it might take a little bit of time in order to get it. As in get the odd bill into that name, then a bank account maybe, perhaps get your driving licence in that name etc (again would need proof you are using it). It used to be that case though that you could just put it onto your passport with no supporting evidence.

So you definitely don't need to go the deed poll route.............but some might do it as it might work out handier for them.......because it can be a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation at the start.

Thanks for this - I looked up updating the passport and changing the name, at it told me, this, so clearly I need the deed poll. I'm still looking for help on that, I've tried contacting solicitors, no response:

Please submit the following documents to the Passport Service:

    • Birth certificate
    • 2 years' proof of usage of the new name, i.e. 1 document each from 2 acceptable sources dated more than 2 years ago: photocopy of PSC, photo ID document, pay slips, utility bills, government correspondence

Unless stated otherwise, original documents must be supplied. Please do not submit photocopies, short-form birth certificates, or laminated certificates. Certified translations are required if documents are not in the English or Irish language.

You will be reminded of the documents at the end of the online process.

While we endeavour to provide the full list of documents required for your application, the Passport Service may request further documents if deemed necessary.

Unless you will need to renew your passport in the next two years, then you don't need a deed poll.

Changing your name at work, and on bills is usually straightforward, and gets the ball rolling on the two years usage.

Then change your passport or drivers licence, and the rest is easy.

I've changed my name through usage, all my docs are now in new name, never needed a deed poll.

I rang my bank, but they said I'd actually need proof of my new name in order to change it. As it stands, the deed poll is my only route to the name change - all other forms require me to already have proof of the change

It is a pretty straight forward process. Your biggest issue will probably be getting the correct paper to print the documents on. It's a specialised legal paper called deed paper, no idea why it's used.

I'd have thought that the Irish version of your name doesn't actually require a deed poll though.
