Motorbike Tyres & Insurance Cover. Advice?

    Hello folks,

    Currently insured with Carole Nash. I have an Adventure Bike with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres (80/20 street / offroad tyres, OEM from the factory). I was considering fitting Continental TKC 80s for some greenlaning in Wales (20/80), but when I asked the insurance company about possibly doing this I was advised (in writing) that the insurance cover is void if the tyres are changed (presumably from OEM spec). This seems a bit extreme to me, does anybody have experience with this with Carole Nash or any other provider? The underwriter to the policy is AXA. I appreciate the TKC 80 is very offoad focused with lower top speed rating (understandably for a knobbly tyre) but I was really surprised to hear that.

    I have never heard of this before.

    Don't think I know anyone who has stuck with the factory spec tyres.

    I wonder if it was to do with the recent recall on the TKC80

    Have a look at the Mitas E09+ btw on the rear for the trip. I did about 6000 - 7000km on my DR650 last summer on the French, italian and swiss (honerable mention) TET as well as gunning it down the motorway from Switzerland to Cherbourg in 2 days.

    They were ok on the Paddy dakar as well.

    Cheers. Have heard good things about that tyre also. The statatement was vague, and didnt seem to relate to the Contis, just said if you changed tyres cover is void. Im going to press them on it and seek further clarification and see what comes back.

    Maybe they think they are full off road tyres, they look a bit like knobbilies(sp?) , not heavily off road biased road legal tyres. I can't see why changing from one type of road legal tyre to another would void cover, I don't even know what the original tyres for my bike where I've always used sports touring tyres.

    You were spot on with the above. Once I clarified fully I was still looking to fit "road legal" off road tyres they said thats fine. So the issue was with my wording! Anyway, all's well that ends well!
