What benefits can i enquire about

Hello

Ive been off work this past 2 months Sick(prolapsed disc)awaiting a surgery date - My work sick pay has run out(ive been claiming the state Ilness benefit since leaving work)

I've no date yet for surgery unless i end up as an emergency, but been told it will be months and then recovery after that will take a few more months. i dont have private insurance that would cover the cost(maybe up to €15,000) What im wondering is after paying taxes since ive been 18 or so(now 43) what benefits i can also claim along with IB. I cant see me being back with my employer within the next 6 months.

Ive 3 primary going school kids, and wife who works 4 days a week. Let me know what all benefits i can enquire about please and thank you.

Sorry to hear about your situation OP , unfortunately there's very little additional allowances you can get whilst on illness benefit, but there's some information attached but I assume your already in receipt of back to school allowance but there may be some assistance under the SWA scheme. Perhaps also consider the Emergency Needs payments. Obviously if your recovery was going to be more than 12 months, Disability allowance could be an option but exceptionally difficult to get, but there's nothing stopping you applying whilst on IB and if successful, there's additional allowances available.

Keep in mind and additional payments, allowances appliee for whilst on IB may be subject to means testing.

You might be entitled to this payment if weekly income is below the threshold . With three children the threshold decreases

Take it from someone who needed that surgery. I was on the list and waited over a year before being able to afford the surgery privately thanks to family. Because I waited so long, I have permanent nerve damage which means chronic pain. I'm much better than I was before surgery, but I wish I had the information and the finances before waiting so long. The ideal timeframe for having the surgery is within 6 months of symptoms if quickly onset by an injury. If at all possible, get the surgery and work toward getting yourself back to employment. I wish you well.

It's so debilitating at the moment ... I've a stone weight on also as I'm not fit to be active as I was.

Your wife should enquire about Working Family Payment (WFP is paid to the person who is at work).

The limit for a family with 3 children is €753 per week (net). Your family should receive 60% of the difference between what your income is and the limit.

WFP is also not considered as means towards a medical card, so if you haven't already, you should apply for one for your family.
