Steve has just announced on-air that he will be moving away from The Big Afternoon Show after 24 years this Autumn and focusing on other projects within BBC radio.

A great presenter for 41 years on BBC radio who gets a hard time on social media.

He'll be replaced by Scott Mills from Radio 1.

BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright has announced he is leaving his weekday afternoon show after 23 years.

He will be replaced by Scott Mills, who currently hosts afternoons on Radio 1, in a shake-up of the daytime schedule.

The new afternoon show, hosted by Mills, will be cut by an hour, while Sara Cox's drivetime show will be extended by an hour and start at 16:00.

Wright told listeners Radio 2's boss had said she wanted to try "something different" in the afternoons.

Steve Wright may well have *23 years with this particular programme on BBC Radio 2, but his involvement with the BBC goes back much further starting with BBC Radio 1 in 1980 (42 years ago). He presented various programmes over the years on Radio 1, Radio 2 and BBC World Service, as well as some BBC tv work such as Top of the Pops and Top of the Pops 2. Along the way, he has also done stints on commercial radio, quite often overlapping with his BBC work.

*Edit: It is 23 years by the way - it started in July 1999

I've been listening to Wright the last couple of days and the music he was playing is interesting. "Night Owl" by Gerry Rafferty, "My Forbidden Lover" by Chic, "The Last Time" by Rolling Stones and "Midsummer Nights" by Kenny Rogers. Yesterday he had the likes of Smokey Robinson and Donald Fagen on. All of this was alongside the likes of Dua Lipa and Mabel. All the older stuff Wright regularly plays will be completely gone from the afternoons in a few months never to return. The "oldies" will be dreck like McFly instead.

The music played is listed on the website.

If the BBC think they will get more listeners by playing McFly, then that is what they will do. But I expect they will continue with their current Oldies format, which attracts a large audience.

There are some great music selections on Steve's show, in terms of oldies you wouldn't hear normally on FM daytime radio.

For example, it's always nice to hear Steve playing one of his personal favourites Christy Moore "Ride On" and not just on St. Patricks Day !

I used to listen to him on Radio Luxembourg in 1979, then in the afternoons on R1 from 1981 or so. Always enjoyed him

This is true.. some of the songs Steve plays are lost gems and will not be heard when Scott Mills takes over
