Clever bike storage - Only space in living room for 2 x bikes - help!

Mornign all, I have a smallish terrace house in North Dublin. I don't have outside space. I also have a road bike and a dutch style bike to store. Up to now, I have been happy to have the road bike in the living room basically behind the door but there's now a second bike and it's made me think about getting something proper in place.

It's a tight enough space and the only way I can see it working well is to get a carpenter to make up a unit allowing the bikes to be stored vertically and filling the rest of the space with storage units. Anyone have any recommendations or experience in this?

Below are my detailed architectural drawings!

Space is 2385mm wide x 2400mm tall x 535mm deep so fairly tight but it's the only viable spot in the house for something like this. Cheers!

How about these angled wall hooks? Totally minimalistic and looks fine even without bikes. Inexpensive as well.

Yup, scale is off as it's more an idea of a what I would like to have in terms of additional storage eked out below and to the right of the bikes. That's why I'm thinking to get a joiner in to make up something rather than a simple wall hanger.

Yeah if you look at the actual road bike in the picture on the bottom right, the red ones on the wall are half the size.

If you put that road bike in where the current gap is, it takes up the whole bottom area right up to the edge of the current white unit.

The green boxes are how much space they'd more realistically take up.

Still doable, but you wouldn't have much of a unit around them for other things.

Yup, thanks for doing that. The sketch isn't to scale at all, just to give an idea of what I'm thinking.

If I'm going to do something to hang the bikes I don't want all the unused space totally orphaned off. Which is why I'm thinking of going the carpentry/joinery route to get some additional storage.

I own the house so I'm less concerned about cost and more inclined to do it in a way that maximises the available space.

I feel your pain, I also live in a north Dublin inner city terrace which I'm battling to fit two bikes into! Luckily we've a bit of a small garden out the back so I'm trying to figure out something like yourself but on one of the garden walls instead. It's all about finding that balance to maximise the space but also not make them totally take up the area visually.

I wonder would there be some kind of solution where there's actually a panel over the bikes in your sitting room so you can't see them once theyre up on the wall? might help them fit into a unit visually a bit better.

I think the vertical racks give the best option if you have enough of a gap between door and wall. I just bought a bunch of these similar to the Steadyrack above though not as bulky or expensive.

If you stack them head to toe so the handlebar of one is opposite the saddle of the other it takes up less space.

I think it would look cool to have a fully built in unit across the full width of the wall with a section where you hang the bikes. You would have room beneath for drawer storage.

I wouldnt box it in real tight either - you may change the bike at some stage and end up with a space that is unusable. The hangers the others have posted and maybe a few shelves for bike gear seem like a good idea. Also dont forget a door stop in case someone opens the door too hard and pedals etc make a hole in it...?

Inexpensive solution to racking a few bikes. A single fitting onto your wall and the bikes are stored vertically. You can see in the picture below that we have 3 bikes stored with a width of just over 5 foot or 1.6M.

Depending on the space you would have left over you could put a shelf above the front wheels of the bikes and a shelving unit on one side and these could take your training gear etc.

I got that Steadyrack one , its brilliant. I was leaving the bike against a wall and the marks subsequently appeared so I managed to squeeze the rack into the utility room wall, it rotates too so loading the bike is simple and then swing it out of the way. Happy wife, happy life

Removing front wheel and hanging tight to frame alongside the bike help any perhaps? Im sure the wheel would still be inside the width of the handlebar.

You wouldn't want to have carpet under the bikes, mine is on tile and it needs the grease and road dirt cleaned off regularly. I haven't done it yet but I will put a plate or covering of some sort on the wall where the rear wheel touches the wall as it will leave a dirt mark over time. It's the same not matter what you do, if you're brining a wet and dirty bike into the house it's going to drip onto the floor and whatever other touch points there are.

Yeah, I have tile and then timber flooring anywhere the bike currently or would go, no carpets will be harmed. :-)

I've also just painted the whole place recently which is prompting some of this as I don't want to leave the bike up against a painted surface.

Removing and replacing the wheel would absolutely dent my willingness to hop on the bike, convenience is king tbh.

Cheapest and easiest would be a row of IKEA wall mounted boxes along the top and side. Then wall hooks for the bikes. You won't have space for anything else if convenience is king as you want to be able to get them in and out easy. Also I would put them furthest away from the door other wise it will be in the way, whereas further away, door open, lift down and wheel out. If it's behind the door, there is a miniscule amount more faffing.

Would two wall hooks on the left side wall work? Staggered so one is higher than the other so there's space for handlebars? That would leave more space to the right of the bikes and keep them tucked in behind the door.
