The Property Ladder

The concept of the property ladder seems to be lost now.

I got a job in 1990 while living at home. My peers were renting shared houses, buying cars and enjoying their single lives. I didn't do that. I saved for 6 years, taking 2 buses to work ... 3 and half hours on buses every working day. I got my deposit and a 75% mortgage and bought a small 1 bedroom flat closer to work. I continued to use public transport and didn't buy my first car until 2000 at the age of 30.

I bought my second property in 2001, a 2 bedroom, mid terrace house in a rural location.

    In 2009, I got married. Eventually, I bought a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in a country town.

That was 20 years before I got an average house and I was 47 then.

It is a slog, but everyone can eventually get there.
