Getting insured on secondhand car

    Hi all,

I have had a long break (10+ years) from driving. I will be buying a secondand car in a different county next week - how do I go about getting insured? Is it possible to get insured on the day or should I buy it , leave it with seller for a few days while I sort out insurance, and then collect it a few days later? I'm probably overthinking this...Thanks in advance!

Can you bring anyone with you that would be insured to drive it home?

Ah yes, that may be the easiest thing - many thanks

If you know the day you're getting it you can get the insurance ready to go beforehand and to start on that day. I did it for my first car and when getting a new one I did the same for switching over. Likely the only 2 positive experiences I've had on a customer service call in the last decade. 🤣

Haha, that would probably be easier but as you say...it does rely on efficiency a bit too much 😅

For third party extension of driving other cars some insurance policies require that the other car already be insured or have a valid NCT to allow their policy holder to drive the other car. Whoever you nominate to drive it home for you they need to check with their insurance company that they actually are insured to drive it. Ignorance of that fact won't cut much mustard if stopped by the Gardai.

If your buying it on a weekday then you could always ring the insurance company at the seller's place to arrange cover from then in which you will be covered to drive it. Alternatively leave a deposit with the seller to hold the car until you sort insurance and then collect it but realistically insurance can generally be arranged over the phone except at weekends when insurance companies are not open except for claims or emergency breakdowns.

I assume you have picked out a model already?

Once you have the make and number plate, the rest is simple.

You can insure a car in under 10 minutes on line / May take a little longer if you have been missing on the system for 10yrs.

Generally speaking, once you can upload your driving licence and proof of address etc.. All the big sharks will be mad for you're business.

Google several insurance companies, you will be dealing with some of the biggest bandits Ireland has to offer.

The difference in quotes will be staggering..

Thanks all, looking forward to jumping back in with the sharks..

Just make sure you shop around extensively for the price of insurance given you've not held a policy for 10 years. Was in the same position myself last year when moving from a motorbike back to a car after 12 years, they dont give you any credit for having 12 years of no claims on a bike so you are back to square one with a car policy. Lots of quotes I got were 1,400+ but eventually I found it after easily 6+ hours of phone calls for 550 euro through Chill, Axa direct also came in cheap at 580. But the vast majority of companies were over 1,400 so it pays to keep searching till you finally find the needle in the haystack.

Before paying for / collecting the car I strongly suggest you get a quotation, if you have been away from driving for 10 years, you may have difficultly getting cover at a reasonable price or at all online. Likely to require a phone call, maybe try a broker and save some phone work. One poster mentioned switching back to car insurance after having motorcycle cover, that can be tricky enough, more so if you have had no cover at all for ten years.

As above - get some quotes, decide which one suits best. Make sure all your details are correct.

Then if you buy the car, login to the insurance quote and click "buy now"

The only negative is that you will have bought the car in your head and will be less likely to haggle a decent price. So best to have 2 or 3 cars in mind.

All really helpful everyone, cheers. Just playing around with a few quotes online, and as above poster said they're coming in at 1400+. Will do some phone work tomorrow

You'll do well to get much less than that tbh unfortunately, whatever the car is.

Like I said, I was very surprised how easy it was but I suppose they're more helpful when they're making a sale. 😂

Have you a current Driving Licence?

Yep, I've hired cars now and then so I've kept it current.

Try boxymo op. They will install a telematic device but as long as you don't act the bollix on the road it's very affordable insurance.
