    Hi all,

I want to sell a used car and am wondering where is the best place to sell it online or does it matter at all?

Adverts is cheap which is good. Donedeal has a massive audience of course but there are some security concerns. Then you have places like Carzone which is a bit expensive, should I just stick it on Facebook which is free but lots of security concerns there too.

So where do you folks sell?

Donedeal generally the place to go. If the car is €20k plus it might be better to contact a dealer directly to see if they are interested in buying, such is the odd times in car supply and demand.

If it's a complete pile of rubbish or not running and worth circa less than €500 it might be better on Facebook or Adverts if you have patience to deal with a long line of absolute idiots.

There is no one great place to sell a car, all the usual advertising platforms have their highs and lows. It also depends on the value of the car your selling. Adverts tends to be for the very cheap cars as most on there seem to have little in the way of money, they prefer to want to swap stuff or offer half your asking price. Donedeal has more audience but the flip side of that is that you encounter more time wasters, no shows, scam artists or odballs just looking for a chat. It also be harder to sell a high value car there as a private seller can limit finance options for buyers. No experience of Facebook marketplace but it seems to be a nightmare finding a serious buyer on there. Carzone I'd avoid altogether for a private sale as it tends to be mainly used by motor dealers.

Unfortunately security is going to be a problem when dealering with joe public no matter where you advertise it. If that is a major concern for you then maybe the easiest way but not the most financially benefitting way for you is to sell it directly to motor dealers. Really depends on the value/age of the car though. Dealers are crying out for used cars so you will get the money into your account straight away with no BS. However don't expect to get anywhere near the car's market value from a dealer. It's the trade off of getting an easy painless sale.

It would be interesting to know the make, model and age of the vehicle. You will not be trading in the car and buying another so, generally speaking, a main dealer will have no interest if the vehicle is over six years old. The bodywork should be in immaculate condition without a single mark. Retail ready, as it's known. I would suggest ZuCar. Merlin Car Auctions is an alternative but you will be charged a sellers fee there.

Am considering this myself at the moment - whether to accept trade in offer of €20k for a 161 520d or list it on Done Deal and try and get a bit more.

Reading the posts above doesn’t fill me with enthusiasm on selling privately.

Yeah its an M Sport with 120kms on it. 100% BMW service history with BMW care (or whatever its called) left on it for another 20k kms I think.

I’d say the most you’d get selling privately is €22k. Might be easier to negotiate a bit with the dealer and try get a better trade in offer. You could also try Zucar they would come back with an offer in a few hours.

The problem these days is with dealers selling less new cars due to supply issues, they are looking to make as much margin off each used car as possible. If your being offered €20k trade-in then there is a very good chance they will retail the car at €27k or €28k on their forecourt. BMW dealers are the worst for trade-in values in my experience.
