Saorview Aerial building in the way

Trying to find the best UHF aerial that I can attach to side of garden room but the direction I need on the aerial has a 2 storey building in the way.

Is there a UHF aerial that can cope with this? Is there one that can “go around” the building or would I need to put it on a 50’ pole? Ie does an aerial need a perfect direct line of sight or will the building “block” the signal to get Saorview?

    thanks

An aerial doesn't need a perfect line of sight due to the propagation characteristics of the spectrum TV broadcasting uses, but something like a building close by can serious impede it.

The best you can do is to get an aerial and test for a decent signal at the preferred location. Test around the area , it can be surprising at times where a signal can be found.

Someone posted here years ago of the difficulty finding a signal, when the aerial was placed on the ground they got their signal.

Would mounting an aerial above the roof be an option to grab a better signal?

Mainly depends on how close the obstruction is. Would there be an alternative transmitter in an unobstructed direction, or another suitable mounting location that wouldn't need something like a 50 ft. pole? If there's an aerial on your house, maybe running a cable from there would be a better idea?

Generally, higher is better for terrestrial TV, & 'side of a garden room' probably won't make for reliable reception, even without the immediate obstruction.

Tks, no I'd say the highest I could get the aerial would be 20-30 feet above ground level and not sure this would clear the building.

Tks, unfortunately no other transmitter, there is a UHF aerial on the building but getting a cable is not feasable, wonder if there is such a thing as a UHF aerial that can rebounce the signal?

No such aerial, an aerial just intercepts whatever signal is already there.

As posted above test for a signal in the area you want to locate the aerial, a deflected signal can get into surprising areas.

Can you call in an installer to access that aerial on the building to run a cable?

    Ok cheers for that info

Would be a massive mess to get a cable run from existing UHF but....

You might be able to pick up a signal coming from another direction. But look at which way the neighbours aerials are pointing.

I have Saorview on a TCL Android TV. Channels 1 to 6 work fine (RTÉ One, 2, TG4, VMTV’s) and channel 23 (Sky News) is fine. For some weird reason RTÉ one plus 1, 2 plus one, RTÉ jr and RTÉ News all freeze, the picture freezes but the sound carries on. Why is this?...
