So my AA roadside rescue membership is about to expire and I am considering if other motorists are using it too.

I got annual renewal quote of €112, includes free Rescue Plus.

    From their website:
"AA Roadside Rescue Membership comes with lots of great benefits 👌

We’re here for life’s little emergencies. We don’t just tow, we fix 8/10 cars at the roadside"

    Exact same experience.

Towed car to garage (which my car insurance would have covered anyway)

I fully appreciate there are times when the problem is beyond the scope of their abilities but I didn't renew after that.

I had it before but it wasn't worth it.

Haven't wasted my money on the AA in years. I'd think about joining in the UK where the service is so much better here its crap. I used to be a member so my wife had some roadside support if she got into trouble the twice she used them the guys that came out were useless. Since then I put the thousand euro or more I've saved to better use.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    NO

Have breakdown cover with my own insurance which I have never had to use so no idea how good or bad that is.

At a guess majority of the 8/10 roadside fixes are flat battery's or flat tyres, on modern cars if they just stop by side of the road it's going to be major fault requiring workshop visit and specialist parts.

    NO

No, my last breakdown used my insurance company but still had to pay €60 to tow me home, he would have brought me to the nearest garage 20klm away but not to my house 30klm away, then again friend who has AA no yellow AA van came out to him just a tow truck taking him to nearest garage which was closed car was left outside then he had organise his own way home, but he did just have the basic AA membership.

I've breakdown cover with my insurance but have never needed it anyway. Form listening to friends the service from AA is awful. Seems lime a complete waste of money.

Maybe back in the day when a mechanic could get a car going not so much now

Last time I broke down the mechanic poked around and said I'd need a tow

Had it, needed it, I was still charged.

Had blow out. Managed to get the car to a village tyre place 500m away. Lock nut had been tightened too much by previous tyre place, so car had to be towed to Waterford.

AA said that as I was at the "nearest" tyre place, that they would not cover the transfer to another one. Never renewed or had any insurance dealings with them after that.

Covered by insurance now. Usually its included or a small extra fee to be added

Car isn't exactly new, 10 years old but I have a 40 euro portable battery jumper and a spare tyre.

I'm not sure why I would need AA with those.

    YES

Have it through bank as a freebie. Had to use it twice or three times. Once a puncture late at night on motorway that also caused suspension damage. Got me to my preferred garage in Limerick at the time and taxi home.

Had a spring break in Belfast and even though I told them to send a low loader, they sent a van first who took one minute to tell me I needed a low loader. Wasted an hour or two.

Brought it to a BMW dealer for me and luckily had a friend to bring me into Belfast where I hired a car.

Strange one the low loader driver suggested taking it to a BMW specialist he knew. Given age of car I’ve long given up on dealer servicing so I agreed. Driving down the road I realised how bad an idea it was, bringing the car to some random garage so I left a message for the driver and rang the AA to explain the situation and confirm I wanted it taken to the main dealer. Despite that, it arrived to the back street garage the following morning. For half a day the AA didn’t know where my car was.

I contacted the garage myself to tell them my car would be collected and not to work on it. They claimed it was too late and the new spring was in - obviously the most efficient garage in the world. My priority was getting my car back unharmed so I didn’t call them on their BS but asked them to put it back the way them found it before it was collected. They said they’d do that.

The BMW dealer confirmed that the car hadn’t been touched and replaced the springs on both sides for less

money than a Southern dealer would have charged.

I had it before but it wasn't worth it.

You'd have thought my wife would have got a tow when the rad split, but no the guy that came out told her it would be fine to drive the six miles home with no engine coolant - petrol car.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Mine got towed to an indie dealer spent 800 trying to sort out an injector code

Main dealer then wanted 2500 to change injectors

Traded it I and guy at local main dealer said it was just a loose wire

That's the card which has a €100 a year cost

travel insurance and AA cover for the €100 payment (no other tangible benefits)

So not free, but good value if you travel outside the EU and drive a lot.

Thanks for participating in the Poll.

It seems over half of us are not using the AA rescue membership.

    YES

    Would never be without it.

Usually use them once every two years maybe? My current cars are a combined age of 87 years old, so lots that ‘can’ go wrong on them. But almost always fixable at the roadside as they are of that age.

Would have serious doubts that you're getting rescue plus @ €112.

    More likely free home start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

    free home start lol

That's the kind of breakdown assist you don't need

I have adac membership. I joined before they stoped taking new members living in Ireland and UK, I believe AA Ireland and UK forced them

Benefits you get are far superior to AA, I drive old cars so have used them 4 time over the years and the AA arrived to sort it out

    YES

I checked it now. And rescue plus is included in €112.

I have never used them but always use their 3 cents off fuel QR code. I might continue with them for a peace of mind.

I'd take the breakdowns over the shame of driving Toyotas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,148 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

To be fair I used this a few times.

Flat tyres and dead batteries. Yeah plenty of people can figure that out themselves....I'm not one of them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,716 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

    NO

You really mean only a quarter are using it,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 491 ✭✭Dirty Nails

If you're getting it at that, pay up quick before they notice their mistake. Rescue Plus for a one name policy is normally around €200.
