The last REAL thunderstorm (‘real’ being a spectacular continental style storm and not our usual ‘thundery rain’) I experienced was all of 22 years ago on the night of Aug 25-26 2000.

You can find anything on the interweb!

June 2020 in Sligo after the lockdown heatwave. There was 50mm of rain overnight and bombs of Thunder and forks and flashes of lightning. Some trees were split in the country but most of it was overnight so I missed a lot of it.

Because it was so Thundery some estates into North of the town were like rivers while others had much less rain.

This weekend anything from 30 to 50mm of rain in the West. It won't be much colder here as its been 14 to 16c during the "good" weather.

July 25th 1985. Nothing but incessant rolling thunder and sheet lightning while the Irish sea was lit up in flashes. Haven't seen anything like it anywhere else or since

A few runs from ECM showing very heavy rain in the SW this weekend, others still not showing as much but ICON and GFS showing more on latest runs.

the potential 7 day rainfall totals from this Friday look nasty with in excess of 100mm of rainfall in many places. I hope the models are overcooking this potential because if this much rain falls in the space of a week we could be looking at some flooding.

    Which places?

Farmers in the South East are in need of all that, but if the 100mm forecast is for the North-west, it's not likely to be of much use where its needed.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

It depends on which model you look at and this will always change from run to run. The south-east will usually be the driest part of the country and this includes very wet weeks like the coming week, but the south-east could still see 40/50mm of rain in the coming week.

The GFS 14 day precipitation forecast is showing between 150 and 200mm of rain over the next 2 weeks in western areas and between 40 and 90mm of rain elsewhere.

GFS over the next week or so.

There is a chance this precipitation charts will get upgraded as other models are looking wetter than the GFS.

GFS run for Wexford, this looks much wetter than anything we have seen all year so far for the south-east.

At least since its not been spectacular in the Northwest we won't notice huge change from mist to rain. Anyways it won't be raining all the time and away from Kerry mountains and Connemara it will be showery outbreaks with dry interludes too most days.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

Thanks Gonzo, so as I'd guessed, it's NW'ly sourced.

Meaning that those in the South East hoping for the SMD to be aleviated will yet again be disappointed by another forecast "wet week"

Edit: While as PaulDry says, those of us in the northwest won't even notice the shift from "wet" to "quite wet" 😉

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

GFS 12z brings less rain to Leinster and south Munster and an almost doubling of rainfall totals in western areas compared to the 6z. Let's see what the next one brings. Regardless still looks wet next week.

ME have a forecast of rain starting on Friday for us down here, and lasting all week long :/

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭Weather BOFH

It's been 13 days without any measurable rainfall here on the Kildare/Carlow/Laois border, SMD is over 60mm at this point, neighbouring farmers really hoping for some decent rain over the next few days.

ME were saying they are keeping an eye on the low development near Galway Bay on Saturday with potential for strong winds, anything showing for this any where

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Lots of spread still on the models, ECM showing the SW /S which Met Eireann mentioned tonight after the news, UKMO showing the Northern half of the country quite windy on Saturday, ICON showing very blustery across the country on Saturday, strong along the Atlantic coasts. So a lot of uncertainty yet on where will get the strongest winds and how strong. Deepening area of LP right on our door step , jet doing its bit to help spin it , very hard to predict but will no doubt get clearer nearer the time.

Latest rainfall accumulation predictions up to Sun night, bit more of an emphasis all right on the W but a lot of chopping and changing yet and again all dependent on the track.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,650 ✭✭✭Birdnuts

British Met 2nite saying that there could be a big battle between cooler Atlantic air and a Hot continental feed basically right over these islands ie. some place are going to get hammered with heavy rain or storms

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Tonights models seem to be limiting the rain bigtime in the east but increasing it in the west. Maybe some potential for decent storms if enough warm air clashes with the Alantic air over Ireland. Will see what the models show tomorrow.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Dont have readings for today but almost certain over 25mm, looks like we could get another 40 -50mm here in Kerry out by the coast up to Sun night.

Blustery overland tomorrow , windy along the coasts and coastal fringes, some marine gale warnings in place and small craft warnings for tomorrow and small craft warnings in place for Sunday , some of those big convective showers could be gusty.

Will we see Orange rainfall warnings come into effect ?? AROME Hi REs is really going for it, models starting to show some very high toatls in the West

Heavy rain moving into the W now, some big totals for the next 24 hrs or so

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Some heavy rain forecast later Mon into Tues and again through the day on Weds ( we will stop there for now 😀 ).

LP over us or close by with plenty of frontal rain followed by showers.

Just a rough idea of rainfall accumulations up to Thurs.

Plenty of rainfall to come in the next 24hrs as the LP unravels its fronts over Ireland with the center brushing off the W of Ireland, interesting to see if there is more in the way of convective shower activity in the W, NW, N tomorrow especially in the afternoon. High totals on elevated ground.

A slow improvement in the weather as high pressure tries to ridge in from the south-west as we get closer to the weekend. After a fairly dissapointing May and June, many are wondering where summer has gone and will we finally get a taste of summer over the next 7 days. At the moment the models are looking a bit on the dissapointing side if you want hot weather and bags of sunshine.

Southern, central and eastern areas should see an improvement though this week with temperatures lifitng into the low twenties at times with some sunshine on offer each day but it won't be unbroken gin blue skies. Inland parts of south-western and mid western areas may also be included in this. Cloud cover will vary but where decent sunny spells occurs it will feel fairly pleasant with temperatures generally 18 to 23C this week with the low twenties kicking in from about Wednesday and lasting throughout the weekend.

The north-western half of the country will be cooler and more prone to Atlantic cloud, wind and drizzle with temperatures there generally 14 to 19C, coolest near the coasts and across Donegal. By Friday the warmth may extend into the mid west, but the north-west corner looks to remain fairly cool into the weekend. Friday and Saturday look to be the best days for the mid west and south-west with temperatures there generally in the low 20s providing there is enough sunshine to lift the temperatures up.

There are signs that this high pressure may begin to break down from the north-west during Sunday and into Monday with a band of rain possibly cutting into the high pressure spoiling things early next week, but that is along way out and could change between now and then. The following week I will cover in the 120+ FI thread, there is a great deal of uncertainty with that week.

There will be little to no rainfall for most areas over the coming week and into the weekend, however there will be drizzle or showers at times across western coasts and the north-west in particular but rainfall shouldn't be as heavy as recent times.

Looks quite cloudy again tomorrow for most of the country, set to brighten in in Leinster and E Munster from the afternoon, good temperatures in the SE /S

Cloudy for large parts of the country again on Fri but better in the S, SE and maybe the E and NE, similar temperature to Thurs

Cloudy again on Saturday it would appear, possibly brightening towards evening in the Southern half of the country, feeling warm and humid which could lead to widespread fog overnight into Sun morning which should burn off quickly, widespread warm day 20 to 24 or 25C away from coasts, very mild overnight, another warm day on Monday getting into the mid 20's.

Todays models are showing a real stuggle between warm and cool weather battling it out from Tuesday. Tuesday on a bit of a knifeedge between much cooler weather coming south and warmer weather staying in the far southeast of the country. Wednesday to Friday now look fairly average with temperatures around normal, mostly high teens. Major uncertainty about next weekends warm potential. The GFS is having none of it with quite a cool if not chilly weekend next week and has completely backed off the very warm scenario for next weekend. However todays GFS 12z operational is one of the coolest runs for next weekend in the set of GFS runs. The GEM the complete opposite showing mid to high twenties across the country next weekend. The ECM showing next weekend to be warm but not to the level it was showing yesterday. Everything past this Monday is still up in the air. In terms of sunshine this Sunday is looking best for the sun to properly shine with next week looking generally very cloudy indeed.

if this were winter you could be almost 100% guaranteed that the warmer air would win.

However it's Ireland and it's summer...

Our weather has to be the most unpredictable/predictable of any other country! I’ve seen less flip flops at banna beach on a sunny Sunday in July!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Looks like a very warm day tomorrow getting up to 25 or 26C perhaps. Getting quite warm here in Kerry until the sea breeze kicks in and then probably knocking a couple of degrees off along coastal areas but should still be very decent. Cloud looks stubborn at first for parts but should burn off in most places.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

AROME showing getting up to 21-25C generally, warmest in the midlands , shows 27 or 28C around Dublin , heat island effect factored in perhaps, that and staying mostly cloud free until late afternoon / early evening and no onshore breeze as such with winds running parallel to the shore from the S in fact good land fetch tomorrow heating up the air until it peaks in the afternoon.

Also Föhn winds for South Dublin in that setup for sure. The Churchtown station on meteociel should be interesting.
