All RTE radio sports coverage to move to 2fm under the "Game on" brand according to one of the Sunday papers

or just cut it...another waste of money when RTE should be cutting costs instead of Dee Forbes begging for more cash

Imagine if RTÉ Gold was turned into a BBC Radio 2 format and given the 2FM network..with the best jocks in the land it would be the biggest music station in the country.

2FM is no longer needed - it undertakes no public service remit, try’s to be cool - but Spin Red and i have stolen their audience.

I never hear it on in taxis, buses or gyms

2FM is better than SPIN, iRadio etc in that there's not as much advertising on it.

Bbc radio 2 has a really strong identity during the day and then at night it has a range of speciality programming. The majority of their listeners are there because they know that the output will be within their lane day time and then the evenings are by appointment of you are into the speciality eg Ska.

2fm mixes their output through the day meaning that their are few listeners who would be interested in listening in a sustained block.

They could definitely learn lessons from bbc and stick to a consistent format during the day, move game on somewhere out of drive time and use the evenings as speciality.

Also as a general thing, get decent presenters, good audio branding and a news output in line with the tone of the station which doesn't mean vapid celebrity either, just not radio 1 transplanted to 2fm

Biggest issue is that most of their presenters are poor..

Jennifer Zamperelli .. feck, just dreadful… another attention seeker..

Ah, c'mon, that's harsh......what about the Queen of nepotism????? Surely everyone sees Lottie is the penultimate talent & if we don't throw buckets of €€€ at her she'll be head hunted by the BBC????????

Can't seem to find a link for this article anywhere. Any context behind why this is happening and when it could be implemented?

Dan Healy is a great man for the Masterplans, whilst leaving a trail of skinking poo behind him in low reach and share.

They were painful when she popped into Zamp's show today, doing pointless hen talk about her sisters wedding..no one cares about upper class weddings in italy...

went on about penis pumps today, christ she sounds like a giddy 15 year old - its amateur hour on the show

I get that she’s trying to make people comfortable discussing sex but the time of the day is all wrong for that.

In the summer, parents in the car will turn off Jen Z because they don’t want their kids listening to it.

if she was, she sounds like a giddy/edgy teenager talking on it and not a progressive type - they could have it as part of the replay podcast maybe as a feature/addition to her show

The main problem with the RTÉ Radio stations well other than RTÉ management not having any interest in running a proper service is that none of the stations have a clear identity with the exception of Raidió na Gaeltachta. 2FM wants to be a youth station but has sports and programs for middle aged people. One is a news and current affairs station with music thrown in.

If RTÉ had the interest, money and permission (none of which they have) they need to reposition the stations. Leave RTÉ 1 on LW or MW with talk, current affairs and sport. Possibly with FM in the main cities. Leave 2FM where it is purely as a youth station. The old FM RTÉ 1 is taken over by RTÉ Gold with maybe some of the phone in shows or middle of the road chat and music. Lyric as it is but purely classic and arts. Marty moves to Gold etc.

I don't know if it's a lack of vision or funds. The latter is more likely. Across the water, the BBC has 6 national radio stations with distinct identities. RTE is trying to be all things to all men and it is a bit of a mess. I mostly agree with what you said but not the proposal to take Radio 1 off FM outside the main cities. That cuts out large swathes of the population for no particular reason. Unless you have some grudge against people who live in Kerry, the Midlands, Donegal.... ? AM and LW sound like utter shite and most car radios these days don't have LW. It'd be madness to have somebody set off on a car journey from Dublin and not be able to continue listening to a Radio 1 show once they drove 40 minutes down the road. Flawed and all as it is, Radio 1 is RTE's flagship station and it should be easily available to everyone no matter where they live.

If it was down to me, I would change 2FM into something closer to BBC Radio 2. 2FM was originally set up as a youth radio station over 40 years ago because of the pirates. In 2022, there are numerous legal radio stations catering for that market, including Today FM. 2FM is little different to these other stations now, only the pay is better (I assume). On the other hand, the demographic that's a bit older than these stations is only catered for intermittently. Why not collate these random radio shows into something more coherent on a rebranded or new FM station using 2FM's frequencies? If nothing else, this generation comprises of people who grew up listening to the radio, rather than a hodgepodge of YouTube, Spotify and goodness knows what else. They're not yet ready for the scrap heap and might like to listen to something closer to what they had in their formative years.

Fair point about RTÉ One staying on FM. There’s not enough room for another national FM network and if there was should RTÉ even get it? Though it would really need another network to fully differentiate their main services. If it was mainly speech, news, sport etc then MW and or LW would be quality enough for One.

You could remove 2FM from FM and go purely online and it’s target audience would be most likely to be listening on digital devices anyway. Put Gold on the 2FM network.

If only they persisted with and promoted DAB+ over the years.

I'm not calling for another radio station on FM though. Leave Radio 1 alone and don't take it off FM anywhere. I would rather see 2FM in its current iteration gone and have it rebooted as something closer to RTE Gold. Maybe not 100% what RTE Gold currently offers but close enough to it. One thing I absolutely do not want to see is talk radio on it. No feckin' phone-ins or current affairs or a token Irish language hour tucked in somewhere. The talk radio market is well catered for already - Radio 1, Newstalk and local radio have more than enough of that. As you said, 2FM as a digital station would be fine. Knowing RTE, they'd still have it draining their finances as a digital station.
