Wire mesh fire proof for bbq

Hi. I recently bought a fire basket and wanted to use it as a BBQ but the gaps in the side are very big and charcoal falls through. See pic. Can anyone tell me if there is some sort of wire mesh I could put on inside of basket that is heat resistant or fire proof to stop coals falling out. If anybody knows of anything could they give me the proper name of it so I can search for it. Thanks a million.

Stainless steel weldmesh.

This is harder to find and more expensive than galvanised mesh but galvanized mesh may give off toxic fumes when exposed to high heat.

I've most commonly seen stainless mesh in the form of insect mesh, but that's expensive and probably much too fine for your use.

Maybe make your own cage using stainless wire.

I don't think heat is an issue with stainless steel, but 1mm holes might get clogged with ash and not let enough air flow through.

I dont think that will make a good bbq at all.

The fire will to be two low down for one and the sides are too open.

It will be a very, very inefficient bbq. Even cooking a few burgers will take a ton of charcoal.

I was looking for expanded metal/woven wire mesh (stainless or galvanised) and found this thread. Can't seem to find any suppliers dealing in small diy quantities. Any help please? Looking for something for the bottom of my bbq, also a few different aperture sizes for soil/compost. Handy sizes of say 500x800 or so.

Just stumbled across this forum because I had a similar situation with a fire-pit type of thing, and had to find the right material to "wrap" around the device. What I ended up doing was buying a sheet of woven wire mesh ( www.bwire.com Belleville Wire Cloth in New Jersey) and some separate stainless steel wire and using the wire as "wire ties" in a way. So basically I wrapped the sheet of mesh around the device, and tied it closed with stainless steel wire. Worked out pretty well.

In terms of cooking on this thing - I am in the majority here when I say that it will be very tough to get the flame high enough where it has to be to get the food cooked. You will end up burning through a ton of charcoal and firewood just for a simple meal - probably not worth it!

One handy source of "mesh" is the local tip (sorry recycling center) and grab the trays out of any ovens they have. Any big electrical store may also have old cookers for recycling.

For stainless steel with a few holes in it an old washing machine drum is another option.
