    Your concerns are valid, but I would say this; Being 39 and changing career paths is totally normal and nothing strange. A lot of people consider themselves too old to change paths at that age but the reality is he has about 30 more years of work ahead of him so I would encourage someone to go after the career they want rather than remain unhappy in a current job.

    The concern would be why did he just change his mind last minuite after fnishing studying? You have to be driven and inspired by success to make it work changing paths later in life and that means having a passion for the path you choose, otherwise it will be difficult to climb up the ladder quickly compared to those fresh out of college looking for the same jobs.

    Talk to him, find out what it is he really wants to do and see if he has a passion for it. But be careful not to come across like you lack belief in him and his future.
