Sports Club Membership - Refusal

If someone has been a member of a sports club with years.
Then suddenly the club refuses to accept there yearly membership, giving no reason why they are refusing the persons membership.
Meaning that the person can't compete in his favourite sport.

Has anyone ever heard of this?
Can any sports club refuse a former members membership?

That kind of discrimination is possible, so long as it isn't one of the nine grounds for equality e.g. gender, marital status, membership of the Travelling Community, disabled, sexual orientation etc.
