F1-2022 Round 5: Miami

    A brand new GP in America and in Miami of all places.

    It will be very interesting to see how this goes and if it is a success.

    Will Mercedes and Hamilton improve after a two week hiatus will George Russel still out qualify and out race Hamilton?

    Will Carlos Seinz have better luck here and Leclerc get his act together after being too greedy in Italy and it costing him points also will Ferrari get this one right and get a 1-2?

    Will it be a Red Bull 1-2?

    Will Haas surprise everyone and win a race?

    Will it be a good race or a terrible race?

    FP 1 on Sky F1 at 7pm on Friday,

    FP2 on SKY F1 at 10:15pm

    FP3 on SKY F1 at 05:45pm on Saturday,

    Qualifying on Sky F1 at 08:15pm

    Race on Sunday at 08:25pm on Sunday.

    just by going with this visual representation of a lap, there are plenty of walls with run only at the end of the three straights. Not much room for error! We can expect some upset drivers and teams if they ruin their sessions in the wall.

    It's a street track, if that's what you mean. But the modern street tracks have been better than the old ones. Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia have made decent races.

    Yeah the thunderstorms they get in Miami would probably need a red flag. But I hear they're very short (often 10-20 mins and then back to sunshine) so probably not a big problem.

    I was there years ago and I think I remember thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening so the race might be early enough to avoid it. You guys are right it would probably mean a red flag rather than interesting racing.

    The WEC race at Sebring a few weeks ago had to be red flagged whenever thunderstorms were in the area (even when it was dry at the track). The law didn't allow people to be working outside in a thunderstorm. Not sure if that's a local county law, or a statewide one.

    First corner is a bit tighter than necessary. Should see plenty of lock-ups and wide running in the long, tightening left-hander. The narrow bit between the 2 long straight is stupid.

    I can't find it handy now but saw one map with DRS and if they go with it it'll be stupidly overpowered. Annoys me that they seem to be completely against having DRS end before the end of a straight/into a braking zone. Are they still on the stupid technology they started with that means they can't tell the difference between an overtake and lapping a car and the DRS can only be closed manually?

    Yeah the last thing we want is the situation they had a few races ago where they didn't want to make the pass because the next DRS would just mean being overtaken again. Some tracks really need DRS. Australia could have benefited form the 4 DRS zones combined with the new rules. But that suggests it's not really a suitable track for modern F1 racing.

    Hopefully the Miami track is suitable enough that even if DRS is too powerful this year, they can adjust it down. Easier to adjust it down for future races than keep adding DRS if the track isn't suitable.

    While it's great to see a bit of positivity coming back to F1 and that the sport is finally finding its feet again after the lost decade caused by the 2014 hybrid formula, the constant praise and over the top commentary I'm seeing around the Miami GP, what a great city it is, what a great track it is, what a great event it is, all the footage of F1 drivers hanging out with random American celebs, all the talk of how F1 is taking over the US, it's all getting a bit tiresome.

    Lets hope the race actually lives up to the hype. Personally I'd love to see them go back to Indy, it's such a shame Michelin singlehandedly destroyed F1's reputation there by failing to produce tyres that were fit for purpose.

    I read an interview with one of the designers where they mentioned that a small portion of the track crosses a public road, which was enough to get the "street track" designation they wanted. Other than that it's almost entirely built on a carpark. Significantly more work has been put into it than the 80s ones of course, back then they just plonked a bunch of tyre barriers down to map out the circuit. This one looks very much looks like a full permanent race track.

    Ah, that's just part of the game. It's like when a singer tells the crowd that Ireland is their favourite gig and how wonderful Ireland is and how Irish crowds are THE BEST!

    You know they say it the next night in England and again in Germany and so on. But it feels good.

    Can you think of any GP where they don't lube up the hosts before the race?

    If they can go on about how great it is to be back in Saudi Arabia, they can easily talk about how great it is to be in Miami!

    Looking forward to it, definitely. New cars, new track, hopefully so many unknowns make for an interesting race!

    It kind of reminds me of sochi. There's one part that goes under the highway, I did see that the original plan was to have the cars racing over one of the bridges there but couldn't get the planning for it. Doesn't seem like it will be that exciting of a race but hopefully it isn't full of crashes and red flags. I think they should stick to tracks already built

    Yeah. And then they went on about how wonderful it is to be in Saudi etc. It's just the marketing material. It shouldn't be taken as a serious prediction about the quality of the race.

    The on-board lap on RN365 has very Jeddah vibes about this race. Can see a few red flags.


    Fp1 and fp2 tmrw evening will be good I reckon

    were listed above but just for clarity, here are the exact Irish times the green light for practice, qualifying and the Grand Prix Formation lap will be.

    Friday

    FP1, Green light goes on at 19:30

    FP2, Green light goes on at 22:30

    Saturday

    FP3, Green light goes on at 18:00

    Q1, Green light goes on at 21:00

    Sunday,

    Race, Formation lap begins at 20:30

    Because of the late start times Channel 4 are getting rightly screwed over. They are holding off showing qualifying highlights until Sunday morning at 8:30am. Race highlights is at 12:30am Monday morning which is the earliest they are allowed to show them. Sky Showcase channel will show qualifying live and highlights also at 1230 am Monday.

    This too shall pass.

    So far I can only see Ferrari are suppose to bring something , New floor for Ocon ( Which Alonso already has) and Mercedes are using Fp1 & 2 as a test on some updates.

    The rest of the Media/reporting seems to be on the fake marina , who Lewis and Brady got on playing Golf , and how Silverstone got the Marina first .

    List from Autosport below , Crash.net is no better . The Race.com is also pretty poor . I assume I will have to wait for the cars to start rolling before anymore real info comes out .

    F1 are obviously going to push everything for money but since it's their money going into this weekend they'll be pulling out all the stops to hype it up.

    If they want new fans, great, but they need to be careful. NASCAR fucked themselves chasing the casuals, all seemed great til it very much wasn't. Over-gimmicking and not giving existing fans what they want is a dangerous, dangerous path to go.

    Even V8s. Or just something that necessitates earplugs. I enjoyed Imola and might try to get to Monza but if it were V8s I'd try and get to 3 or 4 more races this year. The newbies show up and have fun but after a year or 2 it's just an event and tbh I didn't see much at Imola to attract non-fans. In Spa nearly a decade ago there was a far more fun atmosphere, cars audible from 2 miles away. Jesus the sound ya could hear from the start line even at the Kemmel straight was unreal. At Imola the cars could be out of earshot with a few seconds.

    V10s was a facetious answer, but it's absolutely not backwards. They'd be cheaper, faster, far better sounding, have fewer barriers to entry for specialists like Cosworth to participate, and produce much better racing because the cars would be smaller and lighter.

    The current cars are huge bloated barges in order to fit wider tyres and more aero surfaces to get them up to an acceptable speed and compensate for how slow the heavy hybrids were when they introduced them in 2014 and they were multiple seconds per lap slower than even backmarker cars built on a fraction of the budget and running on grooved tyres a decade earlier. Another side effect of all this work to compensate for the inadequacy of the hybrid power units is that the cars now barely fit on traditional tracks like Monaco.

    The hybrids aren't better or forward looking, it's pure marketing nonsense pushed by manufacturers who want to keep living in the past selling fossil fuel powered cars with mild hybrid systems which are destroying the environment by delaying the inevitable forward looking transition to full electric vehicles.

    Ah no, it's all about road relevance. Like the hundreds of millions spent on MGU-H (that's the one they'll be getting rid of yeah) which was heavy, not efficient and so expensive that it's not worth having even in F1. Throw 3k extra revs out of the V6 to get the extra power, I'm sure the extra fuel used wouldn't out-weight what was used to make the useless MGU-H.

    It's the future of road transport. Hydrogen may be the future of heavy goods vehicles, the jury is still out, but electric vehicles are absolutely the future of personal transportation. Hybrid is a complete dead end in all cases and is just something being used to drag out fossil fuel dependence. Maybe synthetic low emission fuels have a future, which is something F1 and some car manufacturers are looking at, but that's a long way from being proven.

    Racing however is not road transport. Electric is still problematic in terms of balancing weight against range at high speeds but it will get there eventually. The new FE cars look to be a big step up but still a long way off something like F1. In the meantime the most suitable technology for racing is what should be used for racing, and that is not the current low capacity low rpm engines that can only push in short bursts before needing to recover energy and that have to drag around heavy batteries and energy recovery systems that contribute to the need for conservative tyre management. The actual fuel used by the cars is a miniscule fraction of the fuel used to transport them around the world so if they could triple their fuel consumption without making a dent in the sport's carbon footprint.

    Road relevance is all smoke and mirrors and marketing as nothing in F1 is truly road relevant, and nor should it be. It's like forcing footballers to start playing in dress shoes instead of studs to be more street relevant and to get marketing exposure for shoe manufacturers at the cost of the standard of the competition, then to spend hundreds of millions of dollars optimising those dress shoes to work on a pitch so they no longer have anything in common with actual shoes available on the high street, while still being less useful than basic studded boots.

    He really is a petulant scumbag of the highest order. The FIA have now given him an exemption, once again confirming that the rules apply to everyone else and not Mercedes or Lewis, just like the last 8 years.
