How does anyone in the adult video industry actually make any money?

Just to be clear, this isn't a thread looking for Government support for producers of pornography, to help them over any additional costs they might have experienced during the pandemic what with public health requirements placing limits on the exchange of bodily fluids between humans and the like.

It's just that a feature of any commercial product is that, to effectively charge people for it, it must be excludable. Which is just common sense "the producer, supplier or managing body of the good, service or resource have been able to restrict consumption to only paying consumers, and excluded non-paying consumers."

And, obviously, excludability doesn't have to be perfect. Penneys can make a living, even if a portion of their stock vanishes out the door without being paid for. Within reason, so long as most folk queue up at the till, they can produce a decent income. And, fair enough, in some online models they may trade on the basis that a minority of folk might pay for a premium service, and that's enough to keep the free bit going.

But there seems to be a huge amount of adult videos just available for free, only a click away.

How does anyone actually produce an income stream out of that?

To borrow a phrase, has anyone actually ever paid for it?

    Holding tyrants to the fire

I have never visited a pornographic website however I did buy plenty of 8mm films, VHS tapes and grot mags back in the day. I’m ashamed to say it now but I also visited a few live peep show w@nking booths during a visit to New York back in the early 80s, before it was gentrified. I never visited a prostitute, though.

To this day I firmly believe that sex labour is labour and that sex workers should be well-remunerated. I don’t visit porn sites like I said (I’m happily married) but if I did I would pay for it.

Getting fellas to pay for pr0n revolves around getting fellas obsessed with a particular porn star. That is why only fans is such a success. There's enough free stuff out there to **** every mickey on the planet into oblivion.

A lot of porn starts use the porn mainly to drive business towards their prostitution services.

Escorting. Production of personal videos (requests) for cash. Suspect some are making quite good money on onlyfans if they have specific things people want.

yes but that doesnt explain how the "male talent " can make any money ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,792 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

They don't seem to make much money for their porn appearances. A quick google reveals many different figures but it seems to be €500 - €1950 per movie, with only the top male performers making anywhere near the upper figure. Most make the lower figure.

Your sister pays me quite well OP for servicing her in her videos.

Kind of off topic but isn't it mad that its illegal to pay someone to ride you unless you film and publish it

Don't underestimate how many people pay for porn.

If you ever look in the comment section under a video you'll often see "Where's the full vid?".

No matter how hard you look, a lot of the time that video can only be found behind a paywall.

The producers of porn (the big ones at least; Dog Fart, Bang Bros, Dancing Bear, etc) will just copyright strike anything they don't want up for free and it'll be taken down in no time.

Most individual pornstars have a verified PornHub account and they post plenty of their own free material. Why? Advertising.

It's a bit like when they give away free sample of cheese or sausages in the supermarket. "Oh that's tasty, where can I get the rest?"

there was a program on tv last week, onlyfans ireland, there was people on it who said they make 10s, of 1000s every month, from subscribers and donations.its like gaming, most online games are free ,but some people will pay for extra content.going to an escort paying for sex is not illegal in ireland,

That's interesting - then it looks like it is that model of earning enough off a minority of subscribers to pay for the free content.

going to an escort paying for sex is not illegal in ireland,

You have that backwards. It's not illegal to sell sex, but it is illegal to buy

The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2017 made important changes to the law on prostitution. It made paying for sexual services a criminal offence. Previously, paying for sexual services was only criminal if the sex worker was either a victim of trafficking or a minor. It also removed some of the criminal offences that were in place for selling sexual services.

If people didn't make money from them they wouldn't get made. Who makes the money and how much is up for debate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

There's loads of cam sites, if you like a person you can pay money to watch the videos, or chat to the person onscreen. And you can make a donation. Twitch is not an adult website, but a lot of women there some times dress in a certain way to attract viewers, I notice alot of the most popular streamers look like models , and they get 1000s of subscribers . I think a sub is 5 dollars per month, so it works similar to onlyfans. I don't see the point of Gardai arresting someone who pays to have sex with another person as long as they are both over the age of 18. I think the adult industry is like the music industry, not many buy xx dvds, not many people buy music cds.

I saw a bit of a documentary on UK Tv there some time ago. Fake Taxi's conversion rate from free content consumers to paying customers is absolutely staggering. Not just as a percentage success rate, but the throughput numbers too. It seems the amount of money spent on porn compared to the relatively small number of active workers in the industry means there is plenty to go round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

And you won't hear a fight for equal pay for men in the industry either 🙄

Interesting point. I suppose the thinking behind it is that women are more likely to be trafficked for prostitution and less so for filmed porn, but then who knows?

Like in every other entertainment industry, the top 10% make 80% of the money.

Everyone else just competes for scraps.

That's pretty much the puzzle - particularly for the professional stuff, that needs (I'd imagine) all of the usual stuff like sound and camera equipment and folk with the expertise to use it correctly, and produce a commercial film.

If I summarise the views correctly, what folk guess is:

    • It's the usual online service thing - you can make profit from the portion of folk who pay for premium
    • That for this industry, the conversion from free users to premium can actually be surprisingly high
    • For at least a part of the industry, it's really an intro for escorts and similar services
    • Like many entertainment industries, it's only highly profitable for the top 10% of performers

    All of which seems plausible.

I watched a documentary on the porn industry years ago in America. Just people going to work , but in a nonchalant kind of way. They’d get a call for a shoot, what it entailed.(gay anal bj’s) Turn up at the studio ( in an industrial estate equivalent) . Meet their co-stars do an enema and get down to business. Show business eh! I’ve never been a big porn watcher, boring as **** unless there’s two of you watching, it’s basically a minimum wage industry. Whatever money there is is pennies from hits, watches and maybe a subscription. Though that programme pre-dated the internet

A mininimum wage industry, there's people on onlyfans making 20k per month, you only need a few 1000 subs on onlyfans to be making a very good wage. She had a sex tape released, that made her famous, and then a few years later the reality TV show started

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,287 ✭✭✭Esse85

Did they mention whether they pay tax on that income?

Sounds like a silly statement to be declaring what they earn if they don't pay tax on that amount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

I would presume onlyfans would follow all laws about tax, prsi etc if you are a contractor or self employed you have to fill out a self assessment tax form or employ an accountant to submit tax returns. I think the revenue is aware of Irish people who are full time youtubers, professional influencers, onlyfans employees etc most self employed or people find it easier to employ an accountant. I think any company YouTube, etc has to also send info to the tax office Re any employees contractors it pays like any other company they get paid by subs, also they get donations. I'm not an expert I think if you get paid 2k into your bank ac the bank also sends data direct to the revenue

Do you really think the revenue does not get paid tax from all the Irish professionals earning money on YouTube, twitch Instagram, etc?

Well she commercially released the sex tape she did with some fella so technically that counts.

There was a program on the Porn industry in America, not too long ago if I remember.

It followed some young one, 20, who was breaking into the industry. If I could remember the name of her it would help. It actually gave a breakdown of the prices for particular scenes, some as low as around 1K per normal Boy/Girl shoot. I would want way more then 1k to have my face and other parts up on the net for all time.

As scenes got more intense the money went up, think a comment was an interracial scene with 2x guys and Anal got her like 4K or something, but the ending comment was funny in that she said she couldn't work for a week or more after it due to pain.

There was a big section about how she did need to do cam work and such to add more Money and as said above, a lot of the vids done were to create a fanbase.

All in all, I think from memory she said a good month would get her 5-7K dollars, not working everyday but maybe 1-2 times a week?

Seems little money for the work needed and the fact you are on the net forever more, I went to a school in Limerick where one girl did a few vids back in early 2010, and still the odd one is sent around a group chat ! Not fun I would think for her .

The gay porn seems to pay better, one guy said he was straight but did it for the money.

Not sure how "straight" he really was though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,230 ✭✭✭✭B.A._Baracus

Apart from onlyfans and camming, known porn stars are escorts. They dip their toe into anything that will pay them.

The new one seems to be if a girl wants to sell her arse she goes on twitch then links back to onlyfans. One of the biggest female twitch streamers is someone called Amouranth, she earns millions a month and she doesn't even play video games. Pretends to blow two camera mics under the guise of ASMR.

... And people pay her. The world is mad.

Also heard that many a 'successful' Instagram model gets paid by Saudi blokes (who are rich) to have sex with them. Then the Saudi guys sh*t on them. Yes... they get s*it on. Its a thing accordingly.

    This world is mad.

There's a lot of desperate people in America and elsewhere who are badly stuck for a few bob so they are more concerned about getting the few bob than the shame of having their face with a d1ck buried in it all over the internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Demonique

From what I heard some onlyfans people spend hours every day promoting themselves on various subreddits and social media platforms

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

its like the music industry, the top 10 per cent make most of the money, there are people on onlyfans making just a 1000 euros per month, they can go on tik tok and make videos there to build up a fan base before they make an onlyfans account . It's like twitch the most popular creators make 100 times the lower paid creators . It's funny one male onlyfans worker has 2 million Instagram followers but he can't get sponsorship deals from company's because he is on onlyfans

If you have an Audible account, Jon Ronson made a very interesting podcast series about how free p@rn has affected the lives of people working in the industry - 'The Butterfly Effect'.

you implied she was a porn star based on youre reply to my post earlier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,725 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Yes? I don't think she won any Oscars (or the porn equivalent) though but apparently her videos were quite popular.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

sounds like the kind of thing Moncrief would have referred to at least once on his show , never heard of any porn star from Ireland , never mind Galway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,996 ✭✭✭Andrea B.

I just googled that and there is actually 17 of them looking for friends/chat in Connemara at this moment.
