Hello all and Thanks for having me on here.

We have decided to up sticks from here in the uk and move back to Ireland(Kilkenny)in 3 months

Now my wife’s car is a 2007 qashqai 1.5 diesel. She has owned it for 2 years Been freaked out the market value is €2600 but due to Vrt,the revenue website says due to NOX gases figures the vrt will be €4500 as a tax!!!

Ive since found this website that I’ve screen shot below, saying if the vehicle is pre 2008 then Vrt will be only based on engine size (1.5) and so Vrt tax will be 25% of market value not the NOX gases.

Doing my sums that’s a much easier to digest €650

Has that legislation now been superseded by this NOX scam tax?

I appreciate the help from you.

We only decided to move,my Kilkenny born n bred wife and our 2 babies last Friday so it’s about 12 weeks away.

    Thanks again

    Kevin

Surely you're exempt from VRT, as you've owned the car for longer than 6 months?

    Is this not the case?

Yes, transfer of permanent residence into the state - so you qualify for a VRT exemption.

This is encouraging! But it is still totally confusing on the revenue website.

I'm not sure if there would be any other liability in terms of customs etc. But definitely no VRT to pay. All this info will be on the revenue website though. Be well prepared though, they will expect all manner of evidence that you have lived in the UK and used the car there. Utility bills, fuel receipts, work related documents. Provide them with a mountain of evidence they can't deny, gym memberships, library cards etc. They told a friend of mine that their job was literally to try and prove you are pulling a fast one and that's the approach they will take.

VRT is an awful disgrace of a tax. It really is daylight robbery.

By the way, I'm in Kilkenny myself, are you moving to the city?

Wow! You have literally made my weekend Thank you so much.

I really didn’t want to have to buy another car for her,I’ve just spent about 20 hours myself fitting new front suspension for her on the drive her to save a few quid.

I will deffo have every kind of paperwork you suggest. That’s great advice.

Yes we will be moving to her dads place in the city for a while -we are hoping to buy a place in the city.We will be 1st time buyers so they don’t make it easy.😩

We were just home in Kilkenny for Easter and told our landlady wants to sell our home here in uk,3rd time this happened, every 2 years - we’ve had enough.

Thanks very much again-I’m sure I will be in touch for advice in future- Big moves ahead!🥳☘️🇨🇮

Just to point out that the page you quoted from revenue refers to the annual motor tax and how it is assessed, not import taxes specifically.

Because the car is pre-2008, the annual motor tax will be based on the engine size, rather than CO2 emissions.

A car with 1501-1600cc engine size will cost 514 euro a year in motor tax.

    Good luck with the move!

    Aha!! Thanks very much 😁

Yeah I have been going around in circles as you can see.

That’s not too bad,we can manage that €500 a year. It’s ideal size with 2 baby seats and pram and all the gyubbles.

I was trying to palm the wife with the idea of getting her a petrol Ford Focus all weekend-she said no a few times 😂😂😂

    Thanks folks-very helpful and a great Forum I’m glad I joined 👍👍
