    Hi

Have a friend who bought a car privately with a UK Reg 2years ago before Brexit.

He now wants to vrt it but had not declared it off the road or has no proof of when it came into the country.

How would he go about getting the vrt done without getting caught out as he has no proof of the car being in the country for over 2 years.

    Thanks

First reaction to that would be to hop it over the border & trade it in. Unless it was registered to a NI owner.

Theres no way around it. If they had a recent hand written receipt from a seller in NI they wouldn’t pay any late penalties or need a shipping invoice. But customs duty would have to be paid on the handwritten invoice selling price

Is the owners address on the V5 in the UK or Northern Ireland?

VAT and duty are probably as much of an issue for him - unless he can dig out a ferry ticket or other evidence of the car coming in before Brexit he’ll be hit for 33% on the invoice cost.

You need that tax clearance prior to VRT - and to escape the VAT and duty he’ll need to basically admit the car has been here for two years, which can mean significant penalty fees. Trading it in up North as mentioned above is probably the best idea.

Hi, do I need to pay VRT if I buy a car (currently Northern Reg) but was previously southern reg (161 DL)? I will be registering the car back in DL (Donegal) again?

If the VRT wasn’t claimed back upon export then you wouldn’t - and it would get its old reg number back.

It’s very likely to have been claimed back on a newer car though.
