Wood burning stove beside a window

Hi all,

I want to put a wood burning stove in a corner between 2 floor to ceiling windows. I've been doing some reading up and I see for radiating stoves you need clearance of about 1 metre, however I've seen another type of stove called a convection stove and I think they need less clearance. I can't seem to find anything concrete on this though, anyone have experience with them?

Hi, are you saying 1 meter away from windows or from wall 🤔

Attached is a photo of my wood burning stove, one foot away from floor to ceiling window and not an issue at all, my stove is a stand stove, small enough but I still don't think there would be an issue of a bigger stove.

Obviously the clearance from wall behind stove very important, mine about 6 inches but I do have heat resistant bricks behind stove.

I'm not a plumber incidently and my stove stand alone, no back boiler etc.

look up the technical guidance documents, i think there may be something in there (part J if i remember correctly) about minimum distances of flues etc. been a long time since i spec'd any time of stove though so i cant recall anything specific

Something similar, I've attached a pic here of the corner in question. A radiating stove should be a minimum of 1m from a window according to the stove installer I spoke to. Because we want to put it in the corner we've to come out quite far into the floor.

The technical documents mention clearance from combustibles, but none mention glass or windows specifically. The only combustible is the wooden window frame, definitely won't want that going on fire!

I presume the stove would be at an angle 🤔 I'd refer to an expert but my hunch is that corner is a little tight, particularly the fact there's a door opening to left. My own window frames are teak, yours look like metal.

Whilst the front and top of stoves radiates most heat, sides and rear get hot also. I don't believe the heat would be an issue with your frames or windows, I'd just be concerned about the door opening 🤔

The obvious concern is heat transfer to the windows/doors. Every stoves manual will state a distance to combustibles so you would have to check each stove. I would be fairly confident a European style convection stove with stone side panels would work. Link below of one option. A pellet stove would also be an option as the panels don’t get very hot and the door is only opened for cleaning once or twice a week.

The windows are timber alright, just a high gloss paint. The door is a big slider and it's fully open there in that picture so not really a concern in terms of space.

Thanks for that, I'll look some more into the convection and pellet stoves, any option that might allow me to get tighter to the corner would be great.

No problem, good luck with the project, as @Forge83 mentioned, there's some fabulous stoves available, perhaps a slim model etc.
