I haven't visited this place for years, recently I commented in a few threads, one got locked mid conversation because the mod probably didn't like where is was going, he gave some horse **** excuse to why he closed the thread saying the discussion was too similar to some other thread. Then one of my comments got removed and I was given a warning because I believed that we should be able to offer Ukrainians a better standard of living than being shacked up with some stranger. My point was if there are places in the EU that will be able to give them their own accommodation and privacy, would they not be better there? Moderator gave me a warning for being "uncivil"

I am bored of this place and the mods after no less than 24 hours back, tally hoe and farewell. xxx

I find that more new threads die a death and are never responded to, in comparison to prior to the migration

I think know that the MODS are too quick to shut down anything that doesn't fit with their agenda and narrative, especially when it comes to right-leaning opinions.

I think the place has gone toxic. Do gooders on moral high-horses and people just itching to have a go at other posters. I don't blame the site itself for this but society in general. I see it happening in real life now as well, people falling out with each other left right and centre. The lasting affect of covid & the restrictions have driven people quare

@Ubbquittious - ....people just itching to have a go at other posters

    This

There are far too many aggressive posters on here. And it seems like many of them are just waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting soul who posts an opinion that differs to theirs.

Boards is full of people abusing other posters. Name calling, deriding, insulting, swearing (with subtle changes to the words), belittling, and a lot that are just downright rude for no reason. There's also the "herd" effect where you'll get up to a dozen or more attacking some poor poster.

I've been pulled up on a few posts myself for what is termed minor infractions, yet hundreds of others posts far, far worse than mine are still on the threads. A few of the really bad ones that I did report... nothing happened.

On the whole the Mods do a good job, but Boards needs to be policed with fairness. When you see the same idiots and trolls repeatedly getting away with stuff that if you or I said, we would be banned, then something's very wrong.

There's a trend where those with a minority opinion accuse the majority of "piling on". The reality is that a forum need differing opinions or debate wouldn't happen.

The "I'm out of here posts" are bewildering though. If you don't like it, and plan to leave, you don't have to tell us. We won't beg you to stay like.

I'd love to see the stats pre and post migration. I've been a member of other forum sites during migrations but I've never seen such a drop off in engagement after a migration. Even the more popular categories don't have the same buzz as before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,532 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

It is what it is at this stage, things haven't really been the same since the migration.

I still post and read it, but less than I used to. Things are less busy and less interesting.

    It's a shame.

Here’s the thing; there seems to be a general consensus that all mods agree with each other and get along just fine. Nothing could be further from the truth, as those with access to the Moderator’s forum will openly admit. Some will consider that to be quite the understatement!

Not just that, but we all bring our biases to the table, but that takes humility to agree to, and even more humility to remedy. I have a great co-mod in Emergency Services with Garda Turner, so if I’m too close to something PSNI-related, I’ll hand it over to him for moderation, and he has done the same for me with Gardaí threads. If it’s something about policing in general, our jobs will inform our views, which will influence our moderation, so we will turn to our great team of CMods and declare ourselves conflicted. We have done, and we continue to so. In my view, that’s how it should be done, but not everyone would agree.

Not all moderators get along, or like each other, or agree with each other, and there are a few who actively dislike other moderators they see as being political opponents who do not ‘support the current thing’ but ought to, and because they don’t, they are obviously bad people.

Unfortunately, I agree that it is a sign of our times that many have never honed the ability to respectfully disagree, or have lost that ability due to online tribalism. How do we reintroduce the word “respectful” into “respectful disagreement”? That… is over to you!

I just think in particular AH and Current Affairs are just a morass of negativity.

It's just non stop complaining about one thing or another, the government, the opposition, the public sector, the private sector, rich people, poor people, Irish people, immigrants, it just goes on and on, in almost every page of every thread there are posters offering nothing but negative opinions.

    It gets so tired.

100%, and if you are on the side of the Mod, you seem to have free reign to have a go at others without any comeback. It's sad that one person can ruin a site so badly.

Hi everyone, i find this very interesting to read the comments here, i have only a few posts under my belt and to be honest i don't think i would ask for any advise or help here again.

Before everyone jumps on me, i have to say that i cannot remember ever getting a proper answer to the actual question i asked.

i see the same thing day in day out when i read the forums that are of interest to me, a poster will ask a question and i think oh that's interesting, i click in and the posters question or concern is NEVER answered, there was a post yesterday where someone asked about what type of wood they would use for a fence, and the answers they go was to use concrete or aluminium plastic coated fence, the OP said they wanted to use wood, why comment with the other suggestions, its not what was asked people!

I agree there is a societal thing and change happening with what i describe as the "how dare you have an opinion that is not mine".

There is my rant, i just wish people could understand that everyone is different and looking for different things, if someone asks a question answer that question, i had a leaving cert teacher that said read the question twice so that the question you are answering is the question that is being asked, and my grandma used to say "if you ain't got something good to say say nothing at all, its not a competition to say something"

OP, dunno why you're "bored" but with 160 posts over 14 years, can you really say you've invested all that much interest in joining discussions?

It's easy to get bored when you're just reading what others have written.

As for the mods, sure.. there's a lot of bias here, and often it's quite easy to feel that they're unfairly hitting your posts while ignoring the behaviour of other posters who support a certain worldview. However, it's the internet.. it's going to be that way everywhere.

Admittedly, I've repeatedly considered deleting my account (over the last month) so perhaps you're right to leave. Sometimes I feel that there's just too many toxic posters with abusive natures here, and little desire to engage in any kind of mature/respectful conversation. And then I think of other social media platforms, and shudder at just how much worse they are.

TBH I think you just need to get involved.. ignore the odd time the mods screw you, and express yourself. There's still a lot of fun to be had. Just don't be shy of adding people to your ignore list.. that has helped a lot.

It's often about opinions, not "proper answers". Life is mostly grey, not black and white.

I have 17k posts spread over almost 23 years. I'm pretty sure if I stopped posting tomorrow, nobody would notice. Unless of course, I announced to everyone beforehand that I was leaving.

But why would I? Boards.ie is one of many, many places on the internet. People come and go. This site and the community doesn't owe you anything. Stop feeling like it does.

My interest here is nothing like it used to be. I read some threads, particularly Television and Film forums, also like to read some of Current Affairs and Covid forums. I rarely engage in discussions anymore.

I do miss having a light-hearted place to chat but I don't feel a connection with any of those threads or some of those who post there. I just...I dunno 'shrugs'

Boards is still a great place to go I think if you need help with a particular issue or some advice. I won't be leaving any time soon but it has a different feel for me these days.

On the Radio forum they often announce they are turning off the radio ("I'm Out"). After complaining bitterly for an hour about how bad the programme is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,340 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

I think what might be a minority opinion on boards might not be one in real life & the crowd piling on are often just a like minded clique

Well no, Boards won't be representative of the entire population.

By 'clique' do you just mean a group who share an opinion? Or do you think the cliques are coordinated or surreptitiously in cahoots? It's the latter that amuses me when I see the accusation bandied about.

A very strange and fascinating forum filled with people who actively listen to shows they hate just so they can give out about them online. Which is weird in a world of podcasts, internet radio, and streaming music services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,193 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

Boards was always like that in fairness. some very bitter sad losers on boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,340 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

Well I know there is at least one clique on here who all know each other in real life and back each other up. They are not as active any more as they used to be though

Have yee ever ventured into The Conspiracy Forum ??

No matter what your opinion on things are, that place is 'controlled' by the same 2-3 poster that just live in there, dont post anywhere else, and leap down the throat demanding answers/more information/ evidence about anything a poster might post (especially if its not the mainstream narrative) before labelling you a "tin foil hat" wearer... Its a different level in that place !!!!

But yes, overall, i would say the whole of the Boards site has really suffered since the change! Its a pity ......

I'm not familiar with that, but it's unlikely that there's a horde of cliques on standby ready to mobilise.
