Why is Easter in Ireland so ****

Aren't we supposed to be a Christian country? Yet our celebrations for Jesus dying for our sins is bland as it gets.

In the other countries they have Mardi gras or carnival before lent yet we get poxy ashes and a pancake. We don't get the parades of latin countries, techno dance festivals like Germany or bloody cruxifications of the Phillipines.

Lots of us however have great craic, there's parades, techno dance, road trips, epic journeys, javelin throwing, drinks & baby sheep eating, celebrating spring, feasting, dancing, BBQ's, get togethers, fire eating etc... That's our bag.

You could wear a crown of thorns and be nailed to a cross on good Friday, then emerge triumphantly on Easter Sunday. I'm sure a few people would celebrate with you.

Being a Christian country and the Christian catholic institutions are two very different things.

What happened in this country was shameful - however, society at the time hid it's "odd" children in the church as a way of dealing with the perceived family shame of the day.

Have you been observing the various traditions we do have OP?

I'm sure your parish priest would be delighted to have volunteers if you wanted to reboot the stations of the cross.

Easter is supposed to be a celebration of the resurrection, for those that believe.

Because it's a Sellers market. I'm not taking the pi$s - seriously. Think of the Easter eggs. Up to Friday over a week ago, you could buy any easter egg chocolate you wanted. Then, on Tuesday 12th April, only a smattering of eggs were left on shelves: because the retailers had removed and destroyed them then. seriously.

oh, i grabbed my Turkish Delight Easter Egg for €2.50 at Dealz so I'm alright Jack.

But yeah, Easter in Ireland is so SH*t: on good friday in Rathfarnham shopping centre, there was a hobo about 60, slumped down in broad daylight by the cloths bing. Good Friday. Ireish style.

I remember my mother going to the stations of the cross in Ballintubber Abbey over 25 years ago. She brought my brother and cousins to it. I was a teenager at the time so I didn't go. It was a play type thing out doors where they crucify some guy playing Jesus at the end. They had it on all easter weekend. They said it was good. But as I said that was years ago and I'm not sure if they still do it now.

We hid our "odd" children because the Catholic church told their parents what they had done was shameful. Only religious people have issues with sex before marriage or unmarried mothers.

I think he was talking about the odd child that was sent to be come a priest or nun. Which was the done thing back in the day. Majority didn't even want to become a priest or nun but were forced into it.
