I should be driving around in a Lamborghini or sipping Pina Colada in Barbados.

However I'm living on a dole budget buying food from the mouldy fridge in Tesco trying to save up cash for a house.

The mortgage I can get with a €30,000 deposit combined with my salary is fcuk all. I could buy a shed in Leitrim or something. So I need to keep saving and living like an 18th century pauper. I'm in my 30s, I should be able to use and enjoy my spare cash. My car is falling to pieces, literally. I drove to Dublin recently and bits were literally falling off it into the wind.

Just need to rant. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Anybody else in the same situation?

Pina Colada is so Puerto Rican.

You should be drinking Mauby in Barbados.

Driving around in Lamborghini on €30k savings? Nope.

OP, if you need to upgrade the car then do it. If you can't afford a house anyway then what's the point in killing yourself saving? Either that or head abroad while you're young enough to enjoy it. This country is a depressing place to be at the moment if you're trying to save for a house.

in fairness for generations people have lived like paupers for a few years while saving up to buy their first home. The only real exception was the insanity of the mid 2000s when the banks were throwing money at everyone (and look where that left us).

It's crap .. it's a pain in the ass for the few years .. I don't envy anyone in the position but if you want to own your own house there is a couple of years sacrifice to get their.

I bought my first house in the midst of the celtic tiger madness ... we didn't have bank of mammy or daddy for the deposit and didn't want a 100% mortgage ... we saved like crazy, got rid of one car leaving us with a bit of a banger for a couple of years, no holidays etc. Didn't borrow more than we were comfortable paying off on our early career salaries - which was unusual at the time.

Thankfully we didn't get burned as much as most of our peers.

it will be all worth it though when you get a mortgage and you are chained to the money lenders for the next 35 years

    OP

You have done well so far don't give up now.

Tesco don't sell mouldy food. Forget about BB dates they are only advisory.

Believe me 18th century paupers really did eat mouldy food and certainly didn't have jobs and drive cars.

About the car, you should try to keep it roadworthy or consider getting rid of it and try to go without one for a while.

The feeling you get the day you walk in your own front door and close it behind you will be your reward.

    Get rid of the wánk-tank.

Walk, or buy a bicycle if the wheel addiction is really strong.

    You'll save a fortune.

Driving a lamborghini and sipping PCs in Barbados is the lifestyle of a multi millionaire. What do you work at? Most people in their 30s do not have such a lifestyle. Saving for a house is a massive pain for a few years, regardless of where in the world you live.

Use some of that money to get somewhere in the world where you can make quick money such as Canada or Australia. Do research on what jobs you might be qualified for or get a qualification.

You've got 30k, I hope you realise how lucky you are. Sounds like your currently wasting the best years of you life by deciding not to really live it, you should spend some of it

Tesco sell food half price if its near its sell by date or things like doughnuts bread that are sold cheap after 7pm, you could buy a one bed apartment.

, apart from the 2000,s when loads where easy to get everyone had to save up for a deposit , I think it's the same in most EU country s booming economy low interest rates equal high house prices . Theres no point in moving to oz or Canada unless you are qualified in a job that is in high demand

So.... how much do people think a house should cost...?

    Maybe work remotely from Barbados.

They've ditched the queen and are now a republic too. What's not to like .

Build a **** load of small apartments. 27-35 square metres. Like they do in the Nordic countries.

Why is it acceptable to have 4 adults sharing a 80 square metre house but not one person living in a small apartment?

Built the small apartments and the price of second hand houses will fall.

Was kind of expecting a number when I asked the question, rather than a philosopy. While I see you point, I don't it's going to help people now.

I have 2 orders of magnitude more money than the OP!

Double that, and maybe you can buy that house. If you dont plan on buying soon, invest a percent of it.

I know your pain OP. I finally have good money and I've to spend it on poxy kids and a deposit for a house for the terrors.

30K ?????good luck, the way things are going you'll need triple that . Even then you'll be F'd in the ass by an investor fund buying the appartment from under your nose.

People should be marching and demanding answers on how the gov intend to fix this problem for a whole generation

I don't know, but it should be a lot cheaper (per month) to rent one than to buy one.

  • I'm in the same boat OP (a bit less savings) but honestly don't know of I'll pull the trigger when push comes to shove on the mortgage due to the market. I'm paying huge rent in Dublin and saving with a goal to have 50k at mid next year and will see when I get to that point what my options are.

I've lived an adventurous life so far with travel and wildness so will have no problem making the sacrifice although an upgrade to the car is required but don't want to get finance or dip into the house savings.

I may end up with the 50k exploring business opportunities instead to invest it into and grow rather than buy the house. At current year on year market growth it just seems idiotic to buy here. Inevitably there will be crash again and it's probably worth holding out for that.

For now - I'll tighten up and save with the determination of buying something but it the idea may be binned. The whole thing is a shitshow at the moment!!

Your choice OP. It's not mandatory to buy a house.

spend your money whatever way you want

Crap idea. Invest it in bank shares, can't go wrong. And in totally unrelated news, here's a logo I like. 😀

Plus you won't be able to cruise around town in it as it won't get over the speed bumps . 😀

What are you talking about? The R955 posted in the pic a few posts back is a beast. Speed bumps matter not to that machine!

30k? Jaysus why not put a deposit down on space flight?

everything comes to those that wait. When the time is right, when prices ( they will inevitably) drop, you are in the driving seat. Hard work and persistence pays in the long run.

How would someone only have 30k in savings by their 30's?

I can understand if they have a mortgage or a family. But a single person????? A person stuck on minimum wage maybe. Other than that, there must have been a lot of pis$ing away done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,223 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

I agree with you here. You obviously enjoyed your 20s if you only have 30k saved by your mid 30s. It's not much at all. Keep saving as much as you can. A big deposit is required these days...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,828 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

I don't think you can blame the government now. OP doesn't a year's net average salary saved by their 30's. There is only so much hand holding and spoon feeding that should be done. If they had say over 100k saved and couldn't buy a house then maybe you'd start asking questions of the government.

Studied, started an unsuccessful business, has ongoing expensive health problems, gives money to charity, broken marriage, sick parents or siblings, travelled, bad investments, money stolen,

    ...

    Perhaps ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,828 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

There are always excuses. There are genuine cases of course, but those are a minority.

If you spend your 20's ignoring advice and pis$ing your opportunities and money up against a wall because you think "it'll never happen to me", we'll you can't expect much sympathy when it does happen.

So should the landlord be making a loss after paying his mortgage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,855 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

That's some Celtic Tiger thinking right there. Should the Landlord be taking out mortgages to sucker someone else into paying? If the Landlord remains out of the equation it will gives others a chance to buy and not have to cover the Landlord's share too. Fair enough if they owned it outright and were letting it as additional income, but otherwise it is a pseudo ponzi scheme that didn't work out so well last time around in 2008.

I think a society where one has to pay to have a place to stay is perverse.

On the other hand we've known about global warming for over 100 years. Anybody aiming to drive a fukcing Lamborghini deserves a life of a pauper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭Montage of Feck

Some would say communism is perverse but how about going half way and provide affordable housing for workers.

    🙈🙉🙊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭dybbuk

    Not talking communism here.

    The basic human rights are:

    • Right to live
    • Right to have space to live
    • Right to fresh, not contaminated air
    • Right to fresh, not contaminated water
    • right to basic nourishment (bananas or equivalent)

There is no natural right to employment, money, housing, medical care or Lamborghinis.

And, unfortunately, there cannot be a right to reproduction. That is the only exception I would impose on Homo Spaiens in terms of restricting our "basic needs" and only because of overpopulation.

But, like all other animals humans should be able to live without having to work.

This system of yours is very effective for generating income and a kind of a "progress". But it always was perverse and now it is destroying the planet and has to be abolished asap.

Mad isn't it. How can that continue? As house prices go up, the people working who can't afford to buy are transferring ever growing huge sums of money to people who never work.
