I think not, due to her area and social standing

This is like the posters in Ukraine thread who say "bunch of hypocrites and racists, why don't you care so much when it's Yemen?"

People think both are bad, but they'll be affected by cases closer to their circumstances. A young teacher out for a jog with typical middle class interests will elicit more empathy from the average Irish person than someone living in a household where illegal firearms are kept or who hangs out with people who carry pistols on themselves. Also, one case was a vicious murder by a stranger, the other apparently an accidental shooting.

How do we know the young teacher wasn’t a mugging gone horribly wrong, we don’t know he went out to murder her

As a people we react to to the story of the day and we have very little "real compassion" we are just dominated by the story of the day and the do-gooders... we just talk the talk... unfortunately that's the way it is...
