5 amp lamp question

I have a floor lamp with a standard 13amp plug. I also have a 5a socket in my living room, which I've never used. Can I simply replace the 13a plug with a 5a plug and turn the lamp on and off from the light switch in the living room (I have a 2-gang switch, one side of which "does nothing" so presumably controls the 5a…

I suppose what I'm wondering is if I can put a 5a plug on any lamp that has a 13a plug. Are there any potential compatibility issues?

Yes as a general rule. The protection should come from your mcb in your distribution board which should be rated at 6amp.

A 100 watt bulb would only be drawing 0.5 amp approx so you have no issues.
