Why so little actual war footage of this crisis?

I'll start by saying I don't do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok, so perhaps I am wrong.

But I have really noticed that there is a severe lack of actual footage of fighting in this war. I assumed with camera's everywhere now, this would be the most televised or recorded war ever. But so far I have only seen 2 clips, one of a Russian helicopter getting shot down and another yesterday of a Russian tank column being attacked. Outside of that, nothing. Just loads of news reports of correspondents standing in rubble.

So am I just missing them, or is there not much out there?

There is absolutely tonnes of footage online. Reddit, Twitter, Facebook have countless hours of the stuff, every day there are dozens if not a hundred new videos uploaded. A lot of it is graphic.

Large amount of footage online. Some of it is extraordinary and of course very grim, e.g. drone footage of battles. I find that mainstream news channels are not showing much as such (not like the "embedded" reporting of e.g. Iraq, more it's footage from soldiers and frontline units themselves)

I'm not that interested it digging for graphic footage. But the OPs point struck me too, from my occasional news watching. Unlike most other conflicts I can recall on TV news (Yugoslavia, Chechnya, Kosovo, Congo conflicts, 2003 iraq war, Georgia, afghanistan 2000-2021, Armenia, etc), I've seen very very little actual battle footage.

I was right then, loads of it about. Just a shame that there is none on the mainstream news channels, its all very sanitized footage there.

We know that Ukraine is being destroyed, but there is only so many flattened buildings you can look at. War is cruel and harsh, maybe we need to see something else.

You're right there's little Western footage. This YouTube site has some very detailed vids of battle footage, plus breakdowns of what's going on. Look under 'Ukraine war' section.

I firmly believe global news channels need to stop sanitizing war and start showing everything. Bodies, deaths, everything. They can use a watershed if they want, place a warning on a clip, but show what's actually happening.

They don't show it because Western media are not embedded with the forces. There is a lot of content out there in raw form. I'm subscribed to a few Telegram channels and unless you speak Russian you don't know what you're likely to see until you it's too late. Some of it is very hard to watch and absolutely sickening.

You are better off not seeing it.

Most of the networks pulled their crews back, there is some experienced journalists still on the ground, but experience doesn't make it any less dangerous when the Russians see journalists as fair game. One of the most experience crews were nearly executed last week.

France24 at night do tend to show more than other networks if you are that interested.

The modern Western Europe has lost it's understanding of the Eastern European way of thinking.

Russia and it's Kremlin based leadership,simply do not share our mores and desires,our refined views of lovely cities and statuary or artworks.

Mr Putin would have his military destroy these cities in a flash,without blinking.

Quite what Russia will do with a newly regained but destroyed Ukraine,and it's questionably loyal population into the future is a very pertinent question,and worth putting directly to the man himself,as even a nutcase,at some point has to rationalize their doings ?
