Any way to block the ads below?

    Mother of jaysus.

I know absolutely nothing of the running of websites/discussion boards, so speaking from a position of pure ignorance here - but how in the name of God can it not be possible on a forum the age and size of boards.ie to control the ads that are appearing on your site???

NSFW doesn't even begin to describe some of the stuff that's been posted here.

And the response is "oh we've reported that one, thanks".

    Seriously?

I won't be cancelling my ad blocker in the near future, that's for sure.

You're aware that, for the most part, ads are targeted at the user based on their browsing history?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,072 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

So I believe (although I used to get the German language ads for men's workwear, I'd love to know which of my searches prompted those??).

But there surely must be a means of filtering out the borderline soft porn that keeps getting reported here?

Almost every site these days has "targeted" advertising - this is literally the only one I have come across that seems to have absolutely no control over what appears on its pages.

And that, to me, is a mystery.

How many other sites do you visit where other random visitors report in public what ads they see?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,072 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    None.

But I visit plenty other sites and know what advertising I see, some of it is fairly accurately targeted, some of it is random, and none of it involves soft porn or foreign language ads.

I could well be wrong, but think ad space does not belong to boards and they have little-to-non control what is there. It's sold/leased by third party to fourth

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,072 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Well like I say, I have not the first clue about running a site, but I'm gobsmacked that there isn't some sort of gatekeeping for inappropriate advertising.

What's inappropriate though? Perhaps I would be interested in meeting Lynbov, 47 from Ukraine

Right, I'm disengaging now, I've made my point.

I think it's been said here before, possibly by Niamh, that these ads aren't based on browsing history, whatever weird 3rd party system they're using. I certainly can't think of anything I've searched for previously that would generate any of the random and often downright bizarre ads I've seen since the change to Vanilla.

Used car dealership in Queens looking to buy my non-existant Merc, for example?

They're fcuking everywhere again. Three times on every single page.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the delayed response to this. I haven't been around in a few days. I appreciate your concerns on this issue.

So. Boards.ie do not control the ads that appear on site. They do not belong to us. The ad spaces are controlled by an outside company. Which thankfully we have a very good working relationship with. That is mostly owing to the fact that users such as yourselves are reporting the inappropriate ads straightaway, then I can forward them on to be removed. That is the only course of action available to us because we do not control them.

Recently we have encountered issues where ads that have been blocked have reappeared. I understand that it is very frustrating but keep reporting them. These ads are aggressively trying to find ways and workarounds to get back in on these ad spaces. So it may take a number of attempts to totally block these persistent ones.

Thanks for all of your input here.

    -Mike

The anime ads are absolutely everywhere again since yesterday. I give up.

Because of these ads on boards I started using an ad blocker.

It was a blessing in disguise,I use it exclusively now and its great.

You don't need one for boards, just don't accept Cookies when prompted.

Same here. Held out for ages and ages, and finally caved, and I would never go back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

I don't accept cookies but still have ads on mobile, untargeted but quite boring really, but have not seen these particular ones till I read this thread 😯

Think I was happier with the boring!

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,575 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

    Seriously, guys?

  • Boards.ie Employee Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭✭✭Boards.ie: Mike

I'll report it now. Thanks for highlighting it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,575 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

I think perhaps it's time to accept that whatever ad service you're using isn't fit for purpose. Yesterday it was dodgy Dutch fancy dress ads. Today it's motorbike insurance in the US. God knows what it'll be tomorrow. More questionable anime ads for whatever Spanish site that is, most likely

What's the point, like??? These ads don't seem to serve anyone. Nobody here is going to click on any of that nonsense so presumably it's a total waste of the advertisers' money too.

  • Boards.ie Employee Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭✭✭Boards.ie: Mike

Google apply the content to these ad spaces. So I'm not sure what criteria they use to place ads. I have not seen ads like this. I get them from Electric Ireland, Unicef, Travel agents, Outdoor stores and lots of other random ads.

These ads serve everyone one here even the views have a monetary impact for Boards of which there are not many to keep the site live.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,575 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

We'll have to agree to disagree on the "they serve everyone here" part. I know you mean they generate revenue, which is in the best interest of the site, but I think ultimately they're going to do more harm than good, either by driving people towards ad blockers (which is about to happen with me) or off the site altogether. Like, how are any of the below in any way relevant to users of an Irish site??? And that's without even getting into any of the NSFW shíte.

  • Boards.ie Employee Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭✭✭Boards.ie: Mike

Fair enough. I know at times they can be frustrating and seemingly pointless ad content but we don't control them. I know that some people find them intrusive, they are there to help and it would be terrible to think that they are driving people away. We are working on creating solutions to make the user experience better.
