Asking for medical reports

My GP referred me for some hospital tests last year. The procedures went ahead in January of this year. There was some findings written down on the discharge sheet from the hospital. I presumed my GP would have been in touch with me with the findings but that didn't happen. I asked for the results from the hospital and I was given one word to describe my condition - 'extensive'. I am still waiting for biopsy results that seems to have vanished.

I want to see the endoscopy report that's on me and my condition.

Where do I go to get this?

Is this a common request or will that be considered weird to see the report?

They should have sent report to whoever referred (GP) you.

OP,, I presume this is in connection to your other Thread.

Normally findings, results are shared with your GP as explained in the other thread and there is clearly a delay and I assume you've not taken the advice to contact the hospital directly.

Obtaining actual medical records is your entitlement and will require quite a complex process under FOI legislation. Normally each hospital or Hospital group have a designated officer that deals with Requests for medical records. You'll also need a seperate request processed to recieve medical reports from your GP.

It is not common practice to request copies of medical reports but you do have the right to request same but it has to be done formally, also worth pointing out, certain information may not be disclosed in cases were releasing aspects of the information will be detrimental to the patient.

There's ample information available on the HSE website about making such requests.

I again reiterate the advice offered on other Thread, namely contacting the hospital directly seeking an update on Biopsy results delay. Regarding the endoscopy results, the use of the word extensive could mean your GP seeking clarifications before discussing results but I do believe if there was something to be concerned about there would have been an immediate follow up by the hospital in question.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

From a person who has a long term illness also, I would highly recommend any procedure you get done in future, always ask the specialist when/how will you find out your results for clarification. When you enquired about your results and all they say was 'extensive', that was vague. I'd ring them and ask again and if they say the same thing then ask them what means (in English). I don't think it's weird you wanting to know your results though finding out your endoscopy results does not require that you look at the report unless perhaps you need it to gain benefits/legal reasons. However if you feel it will put you at ease seeing it for yourself, it may be a case of waiting for them to forward it onto your doctor first and then you'd get to see it however I would ring the hospital where you had it done to double check this.
