Picard's reaction to his oul' wan's hallucinogenic appearance and disappearance in that ep (TNG S1 E06) was the the first sign that Stewart could really act.

I have no problem with Picards mother being the Borg Queen if it is handled well and of she is from this Mirror/Alternative Universe then it will make even more sense.

Why else would the Borg Queen say look up to the Stars to Picard if she were not somehow his mother?

Unless it was from when he was assimilated and the Borg Queen is from the future a future obviously not so good to the Borg so they have come back into the past to try and change things.

Hope the show can keep giving us good episodes. I am happy to forget about Season 1 altogether and just go from season 2.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I assumed the look up to the stars bit was a Q induced hallucination as opposed to something the Borg Queen actually said. Or maybe him having flashbacks as a result of being seconds from death.

Look; we all know it will be Michael, as the future new Borg Queen, coming to save the day.

Plot twist, she's also Picard's step mom

"WRITE THAT DOWN. WRITE THAT DOWN!" Kurtzman to some stressed out intern, probably.

You're never going to be able to trust any new live series of Star Trek until A.K. is gone, are you? 🙄

    This too shall pass.

He's a font of terrible ideas.

He came up with Fringe. Anyone who gave us Walter bishop isn't bereft of good ideas, and possibly just needs good collaborators.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,848 ✭✭✭Evade

Broken clocks and all that. But you're proabbly right in that he needs someone around to sift through the crap and find the good bits.

He has good ideas, just none of them mesh with Trek (it would seem)

Feels like he could actually do with a lore gatekeeper on staff

I'm not even saying that, not as such. Writers are good at some things and bad at others; often a collaboration works because it's a mystical combination of oil and water that doesn't work solo. Red Dwarf, to stay within genre, nose dived in quality when Rob Grant left from the writing duo. Doug Naylor is abominably bad (though it could also be Nostalgia remembering those older series more fondly). McCartney and Lennon being the classic example from music. Often talent just needs others to bounce off of.

What I'd more say is the problem here is Kurztman is a victim of his own success: he has risen to a point in Hollywood now where he doesn't have filters anymore, be they collaborators in the writing room, or even higher ups who reign in his impulses. Someone to go "let's workshop that idea Alex". The silver bullet being The Mummy: a big turd of hubris but not so bad it killed Kurtzmans career either; maybe his directing career. I've long been of the opinion that is exactly what happened to Tarantino or Michael Bay; the guys need a slap on the head, reigned in.

That's fair. I think Kurtzman isn't interested in utopias as an idea - which of course is a huge problem when you're kingmaker for Star Trek.

It was all a bit 'meh' for me. Yeah, some nice visuals and non copypasta ships but a lot of silly wtf moments.

Both Rafi and Rios are starfleet captains just like that? Feels very crowbarred in. And the reaction to the very obviously borg-esque space anomaly is to sit right in front of it, no worries like?

Whilst somewhat better than last season in many ways the lazy writing is still very much evident.

Raffi is still a commander and Rios was a first officer before he had a hand in stopping a Romulan plot and saving the galaxy. While a bit of a stretch to see everyone in their new positions I think this season has to be treated more like a soft reboot than a strict continuation given the amount of course correction.

Lt. Cdr. Raffi became commander and Cdr. Rios became a captain it's not a massive stretch.

Both also left Starfleet directly because of Ohs weird plots so I can see Starfleet taking them back.

I can imagine some sort of protocol was introduced which was originally intended for the integration of the Maqui members of Voyager crew into Star Fleet after the Homecoming.

    This too shall pass.

You're not still watching that crap? 😁

I was thinking, this is everything discovery isn't.

Gave up on it with episode 1 of this season. Roll on Picard. 😂

Tom Paris was brought back in before that after he was initially kicked out of Starfleet after a case of mistaken identity between himself and disgraced cadet Nicholas Locarno.

Ro was also brought back in and Tuvok resigned and came back after serving on the Excelsior.

And that's before we even get to 🤣 Starfleets first ever mutineer 🤣

Spock left to become a space-Monk before TMP, then walked right back onto the bridge. Also literally died and was reborn without loosing a rank-pip.

I'd imagine the door at Starfleet is generally left open for officers to return when they're ready.

Starfleet also has a history of letting things slide if you end up being right like Kirk and co. stealing and subsequently losing a starship but then saving the Earth and via time travelling whales.

On reflection also...could it be that more than a 1 & 1/2 years has passed? Romulan Legolas is pretty far in the Academy...might have actually been 3-4 years since the events of Season 1? Enough time to get back properly into the Starfleet fold for all concerned maybe?

Season one was set in 2399, season 2 is in 2401, so no, it's definitely around 18 months or so.

I find it grating seeing a starship captain with a cigar on the bridge.

I quite liked that. It means he's still Rios and he didn't completely drink the Starfleet Kool Aid. He's the captain and can do whatever TF he wants.

Only negative was my wife being angry because I said “oh, this must be when Q arrives”. She hasn’t read anything or seen any trailers. I’m in the dog house.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think he ever lit it making more like a prop of sorts, something to occupy his hands when he has nothing else to do.

Mike and Rich didn't 100% totally hate season 2 episode 1 of Picard.

Rich & Mike have been dead wrong before with their predictions before ... but I still share Rich's reckoning Borg Queen V2 is Picard's Mother - and the flashback revealed to be a sacrifice by the mother. Maybe go further and reckon the finale will be Picard having to interact with his own timeline.
