    Hi everyone,

    I’ve just moved to a house in the countryside that has a septic tank. It’s getting full now.

    Do I approach farmers to empty my tank? What is the norm in these situations? Are farmers delighted to get a full septic tank to use for slurry spreading or is it a chore for them to do it to help a neighbour? Pardon my ignorance

    Contact a local disposal company who will come clean it out and dispose of it safely.

    Google is your friend.

    Costs approx €200-250, your local Council will have a list Sewage Disposal contractors. They will also issue a receipt, necessary to have retained if you have an inspection.

    Septic tanks are always full.

    Normally have 2 chambers . Solids are held in one and liquids in the other. Liqiids overflow into a soak pit which filters the liquids.

    In theory a septic tank function correctly rarely needs emptying.

    Farmers wont empty septic tanks as if they are caught they could lose their single farm payment .

    As LTF says registered contractor is the way to go

    Unless the sewage is backing up into aj’s and the toilet is blocked you don’t need to empty it.

    As above, if functioning correctly it shouldn't ever need emptying.

    If it's backing up or overflowing you've a problem and need a specialist contractor to empty it and rectify why it isn't working.

    Beware of the guy who just says "replace it with a biocycle or similar" These are expensive pieces of kit to buy, install and run, and might not be necessary.

    Septic tanks are all about the right bacteria doing their job

    As above OP, correctly functioning septic tanks wont require emptying once the are not emitting foul odors in the garden or the drains are not backing up in the house.

    Some rural folk would throw in a dead crow or bit of road kill in order to balance bacteria and counter act the plethora of detergents used in modern houses. (I don't know if this works or not, but the folks that do it don't empty the septic tank)
