A Q about eggs..

So.. when I scramble eggs I get from a mate (he feeds them layers).. they are yummy - no need for butter.. but they are v pale..

Eggs from Centra... free range.. v yellow but they don't taste as nice as the above.. so I add butter..

I wudda thought the eggs from my mates hens would be more yellow in colour in comparison to the centra FR eggs?

The commercial feed contains larger amounts of beta carotene than what the home-bred birds are eating I'd expect.

If they have access to grass, their yolks get yellower.

Didn't they used to add marigold petals to the feed for the yellow colour ? Or am I imagining that ..?

As a chicken keeper this is what we found. Chickens used to be free range in the garden but due to the significant mess chickens leave behind, we now have them confined to a pen. Scrambled eggs went from a fantastic golden yellow colour to the pale yellow you get in most shop-bought eggs. Taste is still miles better and the freshness probably helps too.

You don't contract flu from being outside, silly. You contract it from close contact with a source of infection. Free range birds are generally healthier, and in particular suffer less from infectious diseases. Like flu.

I don’t know how you contract bird flu but I do know, due to dept of agriculture rules, there should be no free range poultry out there. Silly! 🙄

I eat lots of eggs but have no involvement with their production. Could someone explain what the OP means when he says about his mate and his chickens: 'he feeds them layers'.

Layers is a term used for chicken food. It comes in granular or pellet form. I think it’s a generic term as opposed to a brand name and should contain everything needed for the healthy production of eggs.

My chickens have a constant supply of the stuff with the addition of most of our kitchen food waste and grass/hedge clippings. Hens are really nature’s brown bins. 😋
