Should A Cash Buyer Expect A Discount

If the asking price for a car from a main dealer is 22K, do I have a better chance of getting a discount, if I am paying cash, rather than seeking credit through the dealer.

What scale of discount can a cash buyer hope for?

Maybe there is a finance commission payable to the dealer, which makes up for the time and hassle involved in the extra paperwork.

You'll get a discount if you pay all cash over cash + trade. But I doubt you'll get a discount for cash over credit.

Dealers sell cars with tiny margins. All of the profit comes from add-ons and finance.

Very few dealers nowadays will do cash discounts. In fact you'd prob get a better deal going with finance as they'll get commission from them. If by cash you mean bank transfer or pay by card, you might be lucky to get a couple quid off if you don't have a trade in, as for the amount I usually see cars advertised around 500-1K more on the trade in price. Either way, its all going through the books so makes no difference how you actually pay.

Discounts are very hard to come by in the current car market unless it's something nobody really wants. Demand out weighs supply now due to the new car chip shortage and Brexit for used cars, so dealers are very firm on their prices because they are confident that if you don't want to pay their asking price, someone else will.

Car companies and banks are hand in glove nowadays, cash is no advantage

Would expect 1k off a car at that price to be honest, have been car shopping for last few months and 250 was the lowest I had somebody knock off a price rest were up to 1k, I ended up buying last week and instead of discount I got the belt and pump done and got new pads/discs all around so was a fair price for me.

Exactly, if you don't ask you don't get.

Couple of new tyres, a full service, a few hundred off, better in your pocket than theirs.

Not these days, they’re making plenty margin just selling the car, you’re right that finance is preferable to cash for the dealer

In America, no one would ever consider buying a new car with cash as the motoring and banking industry have been interlinked for so long , costs next to nothing for car companies to get money so finance is beneficial for all parties

Main dealers normally price there cars at least 1k over the market price so yes there would be room too haggle.
