Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Are tee times out today?

Lowry and Seamus Power both in the same group and will be joined by England's Tyrell Hatton. They tee off from the tenth holed in round one on Thursday at 8am. Tee times for round one of the Irish Open are in the link below.

Was gonna say, bit of a mute pairing with Padraig given he just won a Snr Major but then I looked at the rest of the field, not the deepest.

Timing just prior to Scottish is a killer...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭SeeMoreBut

Padraig out with defending champion and leading player on race to dubai rankings playing.

    Seems a decent pairing.

Seamus might need to block out some swearing with Shane and Hatton

  • Registered Users Posts: 399 ✭✭IAmTitleist

    That field is desperately poor.

European Tour is in big bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Don't think the field is as bad as some are making out, sure we'd love some more big names especially with the increased prize money. However, there plenty of talent in that field and I'm sure we'll see a worthy winner.

Going on the Sunday and be happy to see any of Shane, Harro, Seamus, Pieters, Hatton, Rai, the Hojgaard twins, Bob or a few others lift the trophy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Only 5 of the world's top 50, including Herbert at 48th, despite a massive increase in the prize fund. Hopefully one of the Irish players gets in contention for the weekend. Contrast with the field for the McManus pro-am is striking.

In the Open Championship qualifying at Fairmont St Andrews a huge congratulations to Dubliner David Carey who will be the leading medalist. St Andrews awaits for Carey. Meanwhile in Princes GC, Galway's Ronan Mullarney is the clubhouse leader at 3 under and will have an anxious hour and a half to see if he will be playing in the 150th Open Championship at the Home of Golf. The top 4 finishers at each of the 4 qualifier venues will qualify for St Andrews in two weeks time.

Lads. Heading to the golf for a few days this week. Never been to an event. Any advice on what to bring with me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,099 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

My advice would be to dress like you're playing golf yourself, golf shoes, warm clothes, rain jacket if required. Course guide if you can get one as it's handy to figure out where you are. Little rucksacks can be handy but that's about it, your phone so you can figure out who's winning 😏 and take a few snaps.

Heading down on Saturday. Email for travel advice is to follow your sat navigation till you pick up the AA signs for park and ride.

We're getting the train down, anyone know where the park and rides are located? Or best advice on how to get from train station to Mt. Juliet please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,839 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Same question for me coming from Carrick-On-Suir side. Is it just a case of keep driving towards Mount Juliet directly until you reach the signs?

How does Park and Ride work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭paulos53

The field for the Irish Open is far stronger than this weeks PGA Tour event. It just shows how poor this week is on the calendar.

The Irish Open has 5 of the worlds top 50 playing in it. The John Deere has zero. Extend that to the top 100 and it is 12-9 in favour of the Irish Open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

With Paddy Power in such good form and Lowry always capable I personally don't really care who else is in the field.

Hopefully one or all of the lads can be in contention come the back 9 Sunday. If that's the case it'll be a great Irish Open.

Are you getting the train into Kilkenny or is there a stop at Thomastown? I can't find much information if any about the event or transport options on the DP World Tour site. Mount Juliet is about 10 minutes drive from Thomastown so maybe there is park and ride somewhere there but I don't know.

Where are people getting information about park and ride etc? I don't see anything at all on the event section of the European tour site.

    Not sure what the directions will be but if you can I think get off the M9 at junction 9 and head towards Stoneyford. You take a left at the school there and that's the road that gets you to Mount Juliet, how far you'll get along there I'm not sure but that's the quickest way to get back to the motorway in the evening too, going through Thomastown will be slower and take you longer to get back to the M9. The school is top left corner of this image;

This is the field where everyone was parked last year, that icon for hunters yard is the Main entrance which you can't get near. If you can I'd see if you can get down as far as that car park but it sounds like they won't be letting people get that close this year. It might be that you'll only be allowed as far as Stoneyford and it'll be P & R from there.

Park and Ride is highlighted on left.

About 1.5 km from entrance to Mount Juliet.

Only one Park and Ride location as far as i know.

Certainly could be a good bet for the weekend!

Interesting, lets see the ranking points for the winner come Sunday, logic is the Irish Open should be much more

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Butson

Apologies I know this is a forum discussing actual play, but have 2 tickets for Sunday if anyone interested, PM me.

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Xander10

I hope it's Seamus and not Paddy, playing, or the quality of the field will be even more diluted.😉

There is an expressway bus service from Kilkenny to Mt Juliet each day on the half hour ( from outside Kilkenny Castle) Info at expressway.ie

Its 28 for Irish open. 24 for pga. Probably highest since desert swing

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,192 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

That must be a rare event, especially given the poor field at the Irish, just shows it's all about timing (and filthy ranking pointers at the JP)

Looking forward to going today. Leaving Cahir/Clonmel at 08:30 so hopefully be at Mount Juliet itself at 10:00 depending on what way Park and Ride works

Early stages of course, but it would appear a birdie fest judging by the early scores. Niall Kearney is doing particularly well, 4 under through 6, great to see.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Soft conditions up there, they’ll change around the pins to make it but harder. If players start missing fairways and hit that wet rough it’ll make the course an awful lot harder.

A 5 iron and a wedge to some holes certainly makes it easier to score up there.

Power laying up from 236 on a par 5 to subsequently take a 6. Shot tracker said semi rough but unless it was in a very funky lie seems detrimentally cautious to me.

Hindsight a side. Opening day, going well, just pump it in there!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Panrich

And again if the tracker is correct, took 4 shots from 93 yards in the fairway on the next par 5 to drop another shot. Very disappointing to bogey both par 5's when he has been going very well besides.

Trying to watch it but it's horrendously boring. Like watching League 1 football.

Golf is not a game of perfect - Dr. Bob Rotella

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Best way to watch it is to refer back to when you played and see how they get on. I had the pleasure of playing it off the pro tees after last years event so it’s great to see how different each hole plays when the pros are 50 yards past where I was hitting it off the tee on each hole.

Coverage is poor though I do agree. Every European Tour event has the same problem and its lack of atmosphere. PGA tour events can often have smaller crowds but the courses are set up to generate atmosphere.

They don't have a lot of cameras is the problem so they can only show a limited number of groups in any great detail. This is basically PGA tour featured groups with some fixed cameras here and there that are showing other groups as they putt out on a green or play a par 3. I volunteered at it last year and it was the same few cameramen following groups in a caddy car from tee, fairway and green. One mobile cameraman per group that they wanted to show and then it varied if there was a cameraman in the towers at the back of the greens. Sometimes they would be there, sometimes they wouldn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,839 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Have to say - I enjoyed the Golf today but Mount Juliet is an awful venue for spectating.

Getting in/out was good but Jesus the grind of getting between different holes is frustrating as so many are bottlenecks

Lahinch etc so much better where you often have a view of multiple holes and from a height

Wouldn’t go another day if a ticket was offered. Enjoyed the bits of Lowry, Power, Harrington that I saw!

  • Registered Users Posts: 508 ✭✭✭Johnny86

I've 4 tickets for tomorrow. If anyone is interested PM me. Apologies Mod if I shouldn't post that here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Was there yesterday, really enjoyed it. Found weather grand really, one period of drizzle that was only bad patch. Was grand not being too warm either.

Big crowd following Irish players, I only watched them for a bit. Was too crowded

Stayed between 3rd green and 4th tee box for good while, decent place as could watch the shots into the par 3 but also the drives on 4th

Followed a couple of lesser known guys, the standard is still unbelievable, they're so in control of the ball. Was surprised at how high their drives go but on an unreal flight

Thought organisation was very good, parking, park and ride, etc all excellent

An interesting one for those into their gear. I saw David Higgins teeing off on 10th. His irons are the TaylorMade rocketbladez, they came out in 2013! So another lesson that you don't need the latest gear to make things work

  • Registered Users Posts: 777 ✭✭✭Pdoghue

Except that David Higgins is almost propping up the leaderboard!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,192 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Bubba used his ping irons for over a decade! Some pros use cavity backed irons, latest gear pure money racket, I'd say plenty of guys want to keep with their current driver etc but forced to move on from sponsors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Yes but he's not actually on the European tour, just got in this week.

Still a great player. Think he turns 50 next year, could be one to watch on Seniors tour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,231 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Have we no Irish commentators on RTE coverage ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,839 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

No. Using the European Tour’s world feed. Same the last couple of years I think

John McHenry there as always though in the studio!
