Chairman of Dublin Cemeteries Trust, David Bunworth, said the wall had been vandalised three times and it would be impossible to stop a fourth such incident.

Instead, he said the trust would erect a separate memorial to all those who died in the 1916-1923 period along with a book commemorating the dead from that period who are buried in the cemetery.

Don't think it should have ever got the go-ahead in the form it was, but some of the British soldiers who were named on it are buried in Glasnevin, so you can see why they might have went that route

Unfortunately , there are neanderthals still living in our society unable to express an opinion or debate who resorting to vandalism.

Its a shame. Best thing to do is have separate memorials rather than none.

Might be an opportunity for a redesign. A wall on each side and a plaque in the middle on how all the dead have a right to be mourned.

Let's face it the scrotes who did this are probably vandalising other stuff too. I see no problem recognising all who died. Its the mature thing to do, and the right thing too. The memorial is not condoning the British forces behaviour. Ironically the type of people who did this are more than likely the descendents of the local garrison, just too thick to realise it

The Gardai were unarmed through the civil war. But then again they didn't have a history of inforcing a unjust foreign occupation that caused famine and misery.

You must take a simplistic and un-nuanced view if you are going to label all members of any organisation as this or that.

It's not that simple.

If you want to direct it at those in charge or the politicians I'd have more sympathy.

I just don't see why ordinary policemen, the majority, only wanting to help people at the end of the day deserve that.

After 1918 certainly not. After the War of Independence kicked off they were collaborators and threw their lot in with the British occupying regime. How do you think the Black and Tans knew which houses to raid and burn? There was nothing ordinary about them.
